Coming of Bisoprolol.

Hi all,

I had an Ablation on the 9th of December. I was told at the time after a month to come off bisoprolol and use it as a pill in the pocket. I stop taken bisoprolol yesterday. Last night had a little fluttering. Today I have had pain just by my ribs under my breast. It is a niggly pain that hasn't gone away all day. My BPM just resting is just over 100 going up and down a little. I was just wondering if anyone else who has come of bisoprolol had a similar experience?

I have been taken bisoprolol for the last 2 years and was on 2.5 mg in the morning and 2.5 mg at night. I was really looking forward to not taking bisoprolol as it made me very sluggish and tired most days.

I'm not a doctor but wonder if you should stop it gradually rather than all at once?

I did ask that question when they spoke about it at the hospital. I was told just to just stop taken them completely. I like you thought it would be better to come off them gradually.

This is just a personal opinion. Your heart had been restrained by bisoprolol for a few years and then suddenly you stopped taking it. I think your heart will need to find it's normal balance now, so may be erratic for a few days and then gradually calm. Some people believe it's best to gradually reduce the drug over a few weeks.

Thanks, Jeanjeannie. I think you might be right. It is just this pain that I got with it that is annoying me.

Obviously we cannot interfere with what your doctor has told you, but from what I have heard from a number of health professionals, is that patients normally should be weaned off of Betablockers over several weeks. The reasons given are that it helps to minimise the risk of sudden changes to heart rate and blood pressure and gives the heart time to adapt accordingly. I know it might be difficult, but if I were you, I would try raising this with your Doctor or Arrhythmia Nurse...….

Thank you. If it carries on I will give the Arrhythmia Nurse a ring at the hospital.

I had to take Bisoprolol for 10 weeks after my ablation, and came off it gradually. That is the best way. Your heart has to adapt to less Bisoprolol and it will do strange things once and again while you come off it and even after you stop completely. Your heart has been changed forever after the ablation, so give it time to adapt and rebalance. At least 3 months.

Thank you. I was really surprised to be told to just stop it. I think I will give the Arrhythmia Nurse a ring on Monday.

You should not stop altogether all at once......should do it gradually over 6 to 10days reducing your daily dose ….

I haven't had an ablation but did take Bisoprolol for eleven weeks, 2.5mg, untill I had a very rare side effect, I was told to stop taking it for 4 weeks, then to take the lower dose of 1.25mg for 4 weeks, then to stop it completely. During the 4 weeks off, after 2.5mg I had the second side effect, this time rare, a tightening of my lungs like asthma but not because of a mucus build up. I spent two nights in hospital on that occasion.

With me Bisoprolol triggered urticaria, (hives), which is now chronic urticaria. I am reminded daily of Bisoprolol

Oh dear poor you. I am so sorry to hear that. I was so looking forward to coming off it as it makes me so lethargic.

I had been on bisoprolol 2.5mg since April 2009 then, after a bad AF spell in 2017 was put on 3.75mg.this made me feel very tired and had extremely cold feet hands, hr was mid to low 40s.I decided to half the dose over a period then 1 quarter over an extended period and since Xmas not taken any dose. I get no palpitations now whatsoever and the resting heart rate has increased a small amount and the cold extremities have improved. I havnt had an AF experience for sometime but I'm pretty sure it's sugar related, really it's like a long term project in a way. Best of luck to you and have a healthy new year.

Glad to hear that your feeling better after coming off bisoprolol. I was on 5mg a day. 2.5mg in the morning and 2.5mg at night. This is why I was so surprised when my consultant said I just need to just stop taking it. I even queried him a couple of times if I should just come off it gradually but he just stop taken them completely.

Healthy new year to you too.

The pain of coming off Bisoprolol ! I was on 10mg for 7 years, had another successful ablation and my consultant wanted me off it .. so it was phased down over a month but that was too short and I ended up going into 6 weeks via staged drops in the medication agreed by my gp. It’s taken me another 6 weeks to start feeling a lot better again ! .. just hang in there phase it down with your gp or consultant and if you feel rough talk to them . I’ve seen reports of some people taking upto 6 months from stopping Bisoprolol before they feel better .. It just takes time ..

Wow, thank you for letting me know that. I will just have to hang in there. I am starting to think after reading the comments from all the nice people on here, that my consultant was wrong. I really think he should have phased me off them slowly.

I was put on 5mg Bisoprolol a day after a stroke, because they discovered I had AF.

My heart rate continued at times to be very high. So I was prescribed 10mg a day of Bisoprolol. I have been on that for 5 years now, with no adverse side effects.
