hello everybody I have h pylori infection after being diagnosed with stool sample results which showed some traces of blood.i am to do triple therapy which is 1 lanzaprozole 30mg twice a day, 1 clarithromycin 500 mg twice a day and 2 pinamox amoxicillin 500mg twice a day. this is what my gp administered and what I collected from my pharmacy.is this dosage safe to take which would be 1530mg of tablets twice daily.i am afraid to take this but this is what has been written on my tablets and so I should follow along? just wondered what dosage anybody else had if they suffered h pylori or if anybody could just send a message back in general then thank you so much.

My husband was treated for h pylori last month, taking the antibiotics you mention - possibly at the same dose - and Omeprazole 20mg to keep stomach acid at low levels. His treatment lasted for one week and he feels much better, having suffered from what he thought was IBS for years.

The only difference is that he doesn’t have AF to consider. His consultant said he probably had the bacteria for decades without knowing. I hope all goes well for you too.

thank you so much for replying to me. I am going to check with my pharmacy tomorrow just to see if correct dosage was administered as I want to be sure about it.it just seems a strong dosage all at 1 time and twice daily also.glad your husband is better but can I ask how he was found to be diagnosed with h pylori in the first place? sorry to take up your time.

It certainly does no harm to double check if you are concerned. My husband’s antibiotic doses were high too but we think it was spread over 3 or 4 times daily - and played havoc with his digestion!

He was admitted to A&E with severe leg pain and blood tests showed very low sodium. As a precaution the consultant ordered a raft of tests, including a gastric endoscopy which identified h pylori.

Very roundabout I know but our NHS was wonderful and very thorough.

Hello I had this horrible infection while suffering from A/F about 6 years ago

The triple therapy gets rid of it but I would recommend a course of probiotics at the same time and a week afterwards it really helps reduce the risk of thrush developing in the mouth which is not very nice to get either

It never came back again I think I picked it up after having my gallbladder removed.

No need to worry it has to be aggressively treated to get rid of it.

If in doubt see the Doc, I suffered this 6 years ago, recovery is slow but sure, cannot remember what the Doc gave me but it did take nearly 6 weeks to feel back to normal. Its very important that you keep hydrated.

There's a lot of controversy over whether H Pylori is beneficial or detrimental. It can cause stomach cancers and ulcers. However it also reduces GERD and other oesophageal diseases and cancers. It has been in the human system for thousands of years. For instance, Otzi, the iceman, had H Pylori. By and large we have adapted to live with it.

So the latest thinking is that in most cases of H Pylori it can be left. However if it causes problems such as stomach ulcers then try to eradicate it. There are even cases where it would be beneficial to introduce it.

There's a good article on it here: sciencefriday.com/articles/...

Interesting - thanks for the link. The key phrase for me in that article was that doctors in the future will be more ‘Nuanced’ in their use of antibiotics. I have heard antibiotics likened to a very large hammer to break a very small egg. We have a lot yet to learn about our Microbiome.

thank you very much for all that information.forot to add that my crp was elevated and so that is why I administered stool test which came back positive and so found h pylori infection.i am also now to have endoscopy and colonoscopy after I finish my medication.

I am all for cutting the use of antibiotics, but both my daughters had H Pylori and couldn’t function they were in so much pain - literally doubled over. When my mother had it she only took one antibiotic which caused such a reaction she didn’t finish the course. Some years later we found out that she also had achalasia, the consultant said from the distension in her oesophagus that she had had it for some time.

Interestingly when she was down on holiday to my sister on the south coast, she had to see my sister’s doctor. She told him how she had been unable to take the antibiotics and he said ‘Well down here we don’t treat it at all’.

The number of milligrams of drugs has no bearing on what is a strong dose as each antibiotic has different efficacy. If you are concerned do check but that sounds like a " normal" dose for such an infection. I agree pro biotics too. Maybe live organic yoghurt on your cereal?

Incidentally I'm taking 1000mg of an antibiotic 4 times a day at present for an unrelated condition and am feeling fine

thank you.so it is 3060 mg everyday that I take them with 1530 mg in morning and another 1530 mg in the evening.but like you said, you take 4000 mg daily so I should be ok.thank you.

The no of milligrams has no bearing on it. What should be checked is that this is the normal dose for an h pylori infection.

I had very similar treatment about 15 years ago and I was fine

I have been tested since as I have Barrett’s esophagus but it has never come back

Check with your pharmacist if you are unsure about the dosage

Many years ago, before I was taking AF meds, I was diagnosed with h-pylori via a blood test. I was prescribed two antibiotics and a PPI. The first lot didn't clear it so I had another, but still my sore stomach persisted. It ended with my sister in the USA sending me some oil of oregano and garlic oil along with empty capsules which I used to make up. This worked. Mastic gum pills are also a good cure.

I'm surprised at how many of us on this forum have had this condition.

It’s thought that most people carry it or have done in the past, but that it causes a problem in a minority and it may actually be beneficial for some.

I’m reading more and more about oregano and garlic and using it far more in my cooking and I really think it is not only antibiotic use which has unbalanced our Microbiome but also our western diet which I know - you know Jean but for others:-

Tip:- active antibacterial agent in garlic is allicin - but it is far more affective if you cut/mince etc your garlic and leave it for about 10 mins before using.

Once you are back on track - do look at your eating plan as there are foods which help our digestion and keep the gut Microbiome in balance and others to be avoided and cause bad bug overgrowth - sugar being the big one.

Probiotics help counter the antibiotic - antibiotics aren’t selective and will kill the good bugs as well - but they will be affective for tackling an overgrowth so getting the balance back is important - lots of prebiotic foods once back on track - fermented foods such as kefir - avoid processed foods and carbohydrates such as bread, cake, biscuits etc.

I definitely will look into this after I hope to be better again.thank you very much

This is a very standard dose and course of treatment for H. Pylori infections. The mg of antibiotics are only relevant to the antibiotics themselves. Each antibiotic has a different mg associated with it . If one says “Take 25 mg twice daily” and the other says “take 800 mg twice daily”, that does not mean the 800 mg medication is ‘stronger’ than the 25 mg one, as they are two totally different chemicals. Some of the strongest medications I prescribe come in the lowest doses. Take Apixaban... that is dosed in 5 mg increments, yet is an incredibly potent anticoagulant.

Just for reference, the standard doses for these meds, depending on the condition being treated, is the following:

lansoprazole : 30 mg 1-2 times daily, Clarithromycin : 500-1,000 mg twice daily

Amoxicillin : 500 mg 3-4 times daily.

Adding up the mgs of all 3 meds has nothing to do with anything.

If you are having pain in your abdomen and blood in your stool which is culturing out H. Pylori, it means you need to take these meds and listen to your doctor. Obviously, follow up with the upper and lower GI tests.

And yes-DEFINITELY pro biotics twice daily!

Hope this helps!

thank you very much for all your help.im suffering some stomach pain at the moment also and wondering if this is because of the medication or what the h pylori is doing to me.i just feel so down and depressed.

The medication to fight H. Pylori will make you sick and give you epigastric pain. That is very common. Just know that the treatment will end soon and will be worth it. Keep your chin up-you’ve got this!!!

thank you for your kind words.i am not looking forward to endoscopy and colonoscopy. I had an endoscopy about 6-7 months ago which was all fine then but the procedure was awful.i just hope that the medication can fight the h pylori at least.
