I’ve never had any problems with Apixaban, Dabigatran yes but Apixaban is great for me but everyone responds differently and there has been the occasional post about Apixaban side effects, can’t remember if bloating was one of them. Bloating often indicates poor gut microbiome but if onset of symptoms coincided with starting Apixaban it’s always a possibility. Have you tried other A/Cs? If not you might ask to be switched.

Thank you for your reply. It could be a number of things but will get it checked out

If you check online you’ll see that gastrointestinal problems are common with Apixaban. I have been putting off going to the GP to check if an intermittent gut/bowel issue is related to Apixaban or something else. Your post is a timely reminder - it’s always worth checking these things out if they’ve gone on for more than a few weeks.

It’s annoying because I don’t feel I really need to take it but I’m told I should I haven’t had an AF attack now for 16 months and before then I think it was even longer thanks for your reply

I didn’t have an AF for 18 months at one point. I still took an anticoagulant because you can get AF in your sleep and not know. Unfortunately, it does rear its ugly head, at any time, and has done for me recently and frequently. Once you have AF always AF., so best to stay anticoagulated. I would be very fearful of not taking it.

It’s a nightmare once you have to take anything constantly it seems to me I also had trouble finding a Thyroxine that suited me so like someone else said it could be the fillers. I have issues with vitamins too

It certainly did when I was taking it. When I had an endoscopy after I’d been taking it for a little while, I saw that my stomach still hadn’t emptied 5 hours after last eating! I have stopped taking it now that Flecainide taken regularly has virtually put an end to episodes.

That’s interesting because that’s what’s happening to me slowed down digestion I’ve also got thyroid issues though so it also could be that. Thanks for your reply

Good luck finding what works for you - with the least side effects

Yes. I get bloating and some reflux. I also get very bad backache. I have a bad back anyway but Apixaban seems to amplify any skeletal pain I have. It is definitely the Apixaban as I have been taken off several times for ops and these symptoms go. It is dose dependent as I have experimented with different doses.

Ah thats interesting because I have never had a bad back ever in my life and then started to get one on and off. Its hard to know if its that or not because I havent come off it so far for anything. I hate taking it it took me a long time to get used to it and mot think I was going g to bleed to death..but I guess Im used to it now but still dont like taking it.

l had awful side effects with all of these new anticoagulants. As a last resort l have Warfarin. Been on this 6 years. They are all hard on the digestive tract and many of us take medication to protect the stomach.

I do take omeprazole on and off but I think that seems to make it all worse because Omeprazole can give you stomach issues too! Cant win really !

Cavalierrubie profile image
Cavalierrubie in reply to Maggie46

I take Omeprazole. It has not caused any problems for me and without it l wouldn’t be able to take an anticoagulant, so although l don’t like taking it, as you say, you can’t win. I don’t know anyone who has had a problem with Omeprazole, but we are all different. I hope you find a solution to stop your stomach problems. There are other acid reducing medications that you could try.

Hi Maggie - just wanted to add that the generic drug Apixaban, like most drugs, is mixed with different ingredients to make up the pill, depending on the company producing it. I have been advised that these can produce different side effects. I shall be discussing this with my GP.

Was on Apixaban for 3 months after having a bad reaction to Edoxaban. Started with bad pain in my right knee and could not sleep. I really could not function and eventually after three weeks I was referred to the DVT clinic. They diagnosed Cellulitis and gave me seven days wide spectrum antibiotics which cured the problem. They advised stopping Anticoagulants. I have put myself back on Aspirin - which brought me round from a Stroke 15 years ago and I have been on ever since. Anticoagulants do not work for me!

Oh golly that doesn't sound good. I guess everyone's different. Did they think the anticoagulants had caused the cellulitis?

Yes. Was on Edoxaban before and could not function. So intend to stay on Aspirin.
