In my own experience it is unusual to stop any drugs prior to ablation so wonder why you did?

I’m not a 100% sure because I’m away from home and cannot check my records but I’m fairly confident I was asked to miss both my Apixaban and Diltiazem morning dose before both my ablations.

I think it's one of those "It depends on your EP" things.

I was told to stop 2 days before my ablation

In answer to chris45558 yes this is pretty normal side effects for bisoprolol withdrawal, your heart has had the handbrake released

No problem.

Hope it all goes well on Friday.

Plenty of rest after, ok!

I was told to stop Bisoprolol 5 days before the procedure and Apixiban the night before. I read between the lines on the reasoning!

Most top EPs now do ablation with the patient fully anticoagulated to reduce the chance of micro embolii causing some unpleasant later affects. Bridging with heparin used to be the norm but has shown to still be risky.

In Sussex I was told to keep taking Flec, Bisoprolol but stop the Rivaroxaban 4 days prior.

I didn’t stop any drugs before ablation. X

I was told to stop on my pre op last week.

Different EPs different protocols obviously. More common not to these days esepcially anticoagulants which used to be stopped but are not normally stopped now for reasons discussed in a recent post on the subject.

i was told to stop my beta blockers 3 days before ablation

I've had two ablations and been told to stop drugs a few days prior both times.

Thanks for the replies. Things have settled this afternoon.

I was told to stop my Bisoprolol 3 days before my ablation so that the meds didn't mask the induced svt. I was however told that if I had bad svt when stopping then I should take it as a PIP if needed and tell the EP at the procedure. I was ok without the meds by the way.

I had to stop Bisoprolol for 48hrs before a 'Stress Echocardiogram' (basically, on a dentist type chair bike affair, that could put you in different positions and connected to the Echocardiogram machine) recently and felt no problems prior to the test but after 25mins peddling like the clappers I was completely exhausted and had two days feeling quite unwell. My blood pressure and heart rate hit the roof and beyond for the hours after; but soon as I restarted Bisoprolol again things resumed to normal but wasn't a pleasant experience.

Told to stop Bisoprolol and Dronedarone before both ablations. Apixaban omitted on morning of procedure and next dose as normal in evening. Hope all goes well.

Hi Chris had my ablation on 28 Oct had to stop all my meds. My EP said that’s because your heart needs to be in its natural state when they instigate the rhythm. Hope that helps x

I was asked to stop taking my tablets before ablation but said if i did i will be in af straight away, so the consultant said just stay on them, which I did.

Oh I didn't have to stop my bisoprolol or any pill before my ablation. Did they give you a reason? Hope the ablation goes well

Hi they said that they wanted all meds out of my system. To be honest last few days have been OK without them. Saying that I never had that many episodes before I took meds

In my own case Bisoprolol was stopped beforehand, because during the ablation a drug is used to induce svt to enable the EP to see which part needs ablating, and also confirm that it has worked. If they cannot do that the procedure might possibly be aborted.

chris45558 in reply toStumpy47

I think that must be the reason with me.

The ablation is pretty straightforward chris, hope it works for you, I've not needed adenosine since thank god!

Glad it worked for you. I'm hoping for the same and a quick recovery

I think the anti-coag suspension makes sense, especially apixaban which can be turned on and off rapidly... but the beta blocker less so at face value. I suppose the doc wants to know what your true BP and pulse is, AND he doesn't want other drugs interfering with any that he might need to use on you. The 'lol' ending betas have spectacular effect on me, both starting and the rebound of stopping... A week would be dashed quick for me to settle down, and I just took more than 3 weeks to come down off them...... even then, when I dropped the quarter pill ! I got an event within 2 days... Everyone is different
