Apixaban and tamoxifen ( and by chance spotted amiodarone on list)

Have just started tamoxifen tonight after breast cancer and know it can cause DVTs etc occasionally. Oncologist felt as I am apixaban it would not be an issue. The data sheet suggests if you are taking warfarin or similar it is not ideal but big cheese aware .

Being of a nosey disposition, after a Google (sorry) found little on drugs .com etc but this US site suggests chance of moderate interaction with apixaban ( and incidentally a few "hearty pills)

Not sure how they can tell unless I start bruising more or bleeding though. Does not suggest dose adjustment unless over 80 ( I'm 76)

Sometimes wish I wasn't so inquisitive. Will have a chat with pharmacist in the morning but not concerned short term.

Hi Bagrat.

I had a wide local incision September 2017 for breast cancer but only had to have radiotherapy. I do have to take Anastrazole though as BC was E8+ and HER2 +. I’m on apixaban and have never known or was told of any interaction between the 2 drugs. I don’t bruise any easier - except maybe when I had ablation 6 weeks ago and the groin bruise could have won an Oscar! I maybe take a little longer to stop bleeding when I cut myself but not much.

I wish you well and hope radiotherapy goes well. Don’t forget to slather yourself in Aqueous cream. It became my best friend during radiotherapy. xxx

Thank you Frances123 . I chose tamoxifen as am good at falling and didn't want to risk osteoporosis. I couldn't find any interaction with anastrozole so maybe wrong choice. Thanks for tip re aqueous cream. I had WLE in August 17 for DCIS so R/T not offered then. They can't decide if this is classed as recurrence or not this the radiotherapy this time. Xx

I had a dexa scan before starting anastrazole and I had just gone over into the osteoporotic range. I now have yearly infusions of Zometa to counteract effects of the Anastrazole on the bones and also take Ad-Cal D3. Rheumatologist recently told me if it hadn’t been for BC they wouldn’t have treated the osteoporosis as it was mild.

I was at Leeds for radiotherapy and they gave you a tube of aqueous first day. xxx

Have taken tamoxifen for 5 years, and take warfarin as the newer drugs make me sick, and so far no adverse effects at all.

Hello! I am just like you,always questioning as to what and why,like to be as fully informed as possible... My friend takes tamoxifen and also apixaban, she also has thyroid meds. So it seems this is acceptable?

Thank you Finvola . Will also be grateful when root canal looming is over. It is only today able to decide which tooth actually aching! At dentist yesterday with xrays tapping and cold inconclusive. Typical!!

Well, I am curious too! I often wonder how we managed before the internet. Whilst I think social media has become a very real scourge in many ways, the accessibility to so much information has been life-changing. Across all walks of life there is more transparency, all we need to learn is how to sift out the good from the bad, the moderate from the outrageous and take information from clinical trials that are run without bias.

Warning to all readers - do not do your research on US sites! The USA is a litigious society and as a result drug info websites are supercautious and if you took them seriously you would never feel safe taking anything. There was a recent study where people taking a placebo reported side effects so the conclusion was that these were effects of the condition or the expectation of side effects. Sometimes we have to accept there is always a trade off with treatment especially for complex patients eg which is worse, to suffer daily severe pain or the possible side effects of treatment or interaction between drugs? We need to be vigilant and report unacceptable side effects in the hope that there is an effective alternative but if not we have to make a decision - I have to say in your case it seems to be a no brainer but only you can decide 😀

Buffafly Agree, that's why I put the proviso on the bottom that nothing in British National Formulary. Often the interactions are theoretical rather than ever reported!
