Evening all,
Bit of a stupid question, but does anyone else find their heart rate goes up when unwell e.g cold and flu. Got really bad man flu, so of course it’s terminal.
But I’m sitting here and my resting HR is 80bpm with ectopics. Just taken my night dose of Bisoprolol and a cap of Night Nurse, so hoping to drift off soon.
I know it’s a dumb question, but just wondered if others have found this when unwell?

Hi Leon....im wondering if you should be taking Night Nurse ? Have you checked that it is ok with your health problems ?

Yes, any kind of bug and my heart goes off. As Jalia says, check the ingredients of any cold remedies very carefully as decongestants are likely to make your heart tachy if not worse.
Night nurse really bad idea unless she is a real one. Ingredients not good for AF. Yes any infection which makes the heart work harder will do what you describe.
You are so right. When ill or stressed your heart rate will go up. Get back on your regular exercise routine in a slow manner and you will be feeling much better in now time. Found that I took me longer to get better as I got older. But, Hey still just pleasantly seasoned.
I have asked the chemist at least three times about taking Night Nurse with AF and beta blocker and have always been told it is fine.
I would be inclined to check with your doctor. If you look online, you’ll probably find it’s not advised.
Hi, I couldn't see anything online about Night Nurse capsules. I dont know about the liquid - it may have a slightly different make up. I have checked again and it is fine for me to take the capsules. I have lone AF. However Day Nurse isn't ok and many other cold remedies have pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine in them which can stimulate the heart. We are all different though and I guess some ingredients can affect some of us but not others.
I France right now recovering from a nasty flu bug. In bed for 3 days, fever etc etc. But no cold or cough, and yes, my resting HR was up in the 90’s.
But I did take Day Nurse and Night Nurse, so perhaps that contributed to the mild tachycardia. I would have thought any infection would make your heart pump faster though.
Could be that your nose is blocked and you are breathing through your mouth or just not getting enough oxygen in stressing the heart. Try Breatheright nasal strips (no I am not on commission), I use them at night and I am sure it has helped reduce my mild sleep apnea & consequently I feel better in the morning. Sorry I can't recall the detail but I read breathing through the nose produces something (Nitric Oxide??) which helps the heart - hence why I was told as a child to always breathe through my nose. Hope something there helps.
Yes definitely. In fact last Christmas my daughter-in-law's father came to our house with flu which he kindly shared with all of us and I ended up in hospital with tachycardia and AF. I have noticed that each time I'm a little unwell my heart decides it's time to perform its acrobats. I hope you feel better soon.
Thank you all for your replies, I have been knocked sideways by a bug for 3 days and bed ridden! I have barely been able to stay awake, let alone pick up my phone. Well, the Night Nurse hasn’t caused me any issues at all, aside from actually helping me sleep. I rarely take meds aside from Paracetamol, but Night Nurse is amazing.
I think I’ve been suffering from a few more symptoms recently and some have been anxiety, and the other day at work I had a guy running up the railway track in front of a train so me and a police officer chased him and detained him. My heart definitely went into SVT from what I felt, but I didn’t take a scan as I just wanted to see if it subsided and it did. It didn’t affect me in any way, but it was a harsh reminder that I am limited physically now, which is hard given how active I was in my previous job as a police officer.
I have put on a bit of weight, and am really struggling to get it off. I’m what you call skinny fat. I don’t look it, but I’m 14.5st.
The last time I had a bad cold, I had a full blown AF episode and went to the ER. Fever, fatigue and dehydration from the illness can upset the heart rhythm.
How do I slow a rapid heart rate?
