Nausea

Any thoughts on lack of appetite, feeling of fullness after eating only small amounts and often nausea sensation when I wake up. Ablation 3 month ago and hr is being good. I am on 20mg rivaroxaban and 2.5mg of Bisoprolol twice a day . Could it be drug related possibly? Due follow up appointment in 2 weeks and want to be armed with as much information as possible.

I had a very similar problem for months.

I found no identifiable cause or remedy. Only time seems to have now settled things for me.

There is no doubt that there is a connection from heart to gut some say via the vagal system.

Vagus nerve problem I would think rather than drug related . Only thought is are you taking your rivaroxaban properly i e with a proper meal containing fat. That is important for lots of reasons.

Nafi in reply toBobD

I take it in the morning when forcing down a slice of toast or if really nausea a banana. Do I need it with fat ? Feel sick before taking it so probably 20 hours approximately since previous tablet if that makes sense BobD ?

There was a bullitin recently which advised that rivaroxaban needs to be take with a proper meal NOT just a slice of toast and that the meal should include some fat. IF not the drug is not properly absorbed and you will not be fully protected against stroke. Please take NOTE.

Hi, the instructions with the tablets say take with evening meal as far as I remember, anyway I changed to Apixaban which you can take on an empty stomach so more suitable for IBS/diverticular disease and all good!

I take rivaroxaban and you need to take it after your evening meal.

Really no one has told me this.

ADMIN POSTED THIS ABOUT A MONTH AGO. There was a report that a number of people on rivaroxaban had suffered strokes as a result of not following instruction and not being protected. It is apparently in the paper work. Sadly many doctors do not seem to understand this either.

Sorry bob I tend to dip in and out so I must have missed it. Thank goodness this came up. I will change when I take it. I usually take it in the morning with my bisopolol. So I don’t forget it. I have only been given strips at the moment and not a proper box with instructions. I have a prescription to pick up from the drs so I will have a read then. Many thanks Deb

Hi Bob. I am new here. and I've read several of your replies to people, and while I appreciate that you are trying to help, I have to say that you often come across as aggressive and judgemental in the tone and manner in which you write. I've been involved with the charity MIND for the past 8 years, befriending many people who suffer both physical and mental health issues, and one thing that MIND doesn't do is either come off as aggressive to anyone, nor do they judge. Replies to someone's post where they seek help should be supportive and kind. I don't think anyone wants to feel as though they are being judged, or being told off in some way, or talked down to or have assumptions made about them. The whole point of a support forum is to support people, not knock them in any way. I just thought I'd say this as perhaps others have thought this about you, but haven't said anything. Kind regards

Hi I'm on rivaroxaban and I too used to take it in the morning and had the same problem. Then I was told by my EP that you take it after your evening meal. It made a difference.

Just had my third ablation and the same thing happened to me with each one. Had to eat small meals and only liquids for a while when it really acted up. Since I have had hiatal hernia surgery three years ago, I did a follow up with the doctor (after my second ablation) who did an endoscopy. It was normal. He then suggested a motility test saying there could be nerve damage from the hernia surgery or ablations. I haven’t done it yet due to helping with family issues, but I will get it soon. It can be a nuisance because many times I can’t eat during the day at work or I get nauseous.

I haven’t had diagnosis yet, just had my exercise stress test and awaiting full results.. however I get this constantly the past 6 months. I have lost 3 stone because of it. Feeling constantly full, and like I’ve eaten a 10 course meal even after a snack. I’m not much help, but has been Interesting to know that it could well be heart related.

dani777 profile image

hi. because i also have bowel disease, i blame my recurring nausea on that rather than any heart related issue. the higher dose of Prednisone had almost wiped out the nausea, but now that I've tapered down to a lower dosage the nausea is back. I do think the stomach and heart are linked, though, and they say there is a link between gastric issues and A Fib or at least palpitations.

Rivaroxaban should be taken with evening meal, apparently it works better. There's stuff about it on the manufacturer's website. I've only recently found this out, after being on it for 3 years. Interesting what people are saying about nausea, feeling full after eating a small amount. I've had this since my afib started 4 weeks ago. I thought it was because I also have reflux disease, but sounds like it's the cardio gastric link playing up. At least it's making me lose weight.

The leaflet that came with my supply just says eat with food. Nothing about evening meal. This is so confusing

This says to take with the evening meal if you are taking it for afib.

Hospitals don't bother about stuff like that in my experience, as long as the meds are ticked on the chart they are satisfied 🙁 Understandable but unsatisfactory......

Very difficult to say. The symptom need not be related to medication. Best to keep a diary to take to your appointment. A key question might be: was the onset shortly after commencing the medication?
