Hi Pete I had 2 ablations this year and did not take the Lansoprozole as I knew about the negative side effects now six months on I have stomach problems every day reflux pain and nausea I try to eat small very plain meals and probiotic yogurt which helps a little, but I will in the new year make an appointment to my gastrenterologist for further advice, I would urge you also if this does not settle to do the same Pete, hope you find a solution and I will post how I also get on.
Thank you for your message Ingrid had reflux hence the Lansoprazole.
The only caveat is that being a veteran AF (hopefully ex AF) patient of more than two decades, I identify the nausea with my heart and heartbeat albeit sometimes it is worse when I am eating hot food.
I think you might find Dr Sanjay Gupta's work interesting. Search for his videos on Youtube, particularly the links between the gut and the heart. Never posted a link before so hope this works: youtube.com/watch?v=zt4Cw-V...
Thank you very much for this link. I am aware of Sanjay Gupta's very helpful videos but was unware of this one that addresses my problem almost exactly.
In the video he talks about the link between the stomach and the heart, the vegus nerve and also the link between stomach medication and heart medication.
I am on Lansoprazole because I have reflux and a small hietus hernia. He explains that Lansoprazole is a a Proton Inhibitor. This means that by reducing the acid in the stomach including benefitial compounds such as magnesium and B12.
The deficiency of Magnesium is also linked to ectopics and he therefore advises coming of the Lansonprazole for a few days and then taking some Magnesium to boost the Magnesium in my body.
Believe it or not I was quite close to this conclusion myself and stopped taking Lansoprazole this morning but to be honest I did not know why I was doing it.
Problem with many if not most gastric problems is that it is hard to know what the root cause of the matter is. With hiatus hernia I don't know if that's a simple physical thing, or whether there is some other root cause, but many acid / reflux / burping / IBS / other types of gastric problem are very difficult to find the root cause. With me prior to my AF ablation years ago I found that I had a wheat intolerance. When I stopped eating wheat my gastric state improved 100% but by then it was too late and the constant vagal over-stimulation on my heart ove rmany years had either greatly influenced, or in my view possibly even caused, my AF.
I have been AF free since the ablation but have had a lot of ectopics and these flared up some months ago, coincident with further gastric symptoms. Having now realised (courtesy Dr Gupta) that this needed treating as its own problem, I have been using Ranitidine as baseline acid suppression and Gaviscon for quick-response treatment and have also wondered what my problem root cause is. Having had the wheat experience, I then looked at perhaps what else I might be intolerant of and though it's early days I think I might be lactose intolerant, since avoiding all dairy products makes by gastric problems disappear and my ectopics vanish too. I've gone from a really bad state 3 weeks ago to almost normal now.
I think we can never be too curious about what makes us tick, provided you base this on science
Just remembered you mentioned constipation and medication for that, I know you feel the nausea is related to your heart issues but difficult to tell which chicken etc
I think I will firstly talk to my EP in 2 weeks and then if necessary see my GP. I find it so difficult with the GP as in reality although I am not qualified I know far more about most of my conditions than he does and he seems to glaze over when I talk about my specific ailments.
I get the feeling sometimes that as I am a Septogenarion and also have had so many problems with my heart and various other parts of my body that they probably think "Oh no not him again" With my allergies I was as close to suicide as I am every likely to be and yet had to go private to get some support from a dermatoligist. The allergies being precipitated by my the electrodes attached to me for my abalations.
Hey ho, what I must be thankful for however, is that I am AF free for the first time in decades and there are so many more poor souls much worse off than me.
I do count my blessings rather than my chickens......
