Nausea at night

Alphakiwi profile image
33 Replies

I have recently gone off Diltiazem 120mg slow release capsules for aflutter which my heart is in nearly 100 % of the time. I am now on Verapamil 40mg x3 times a day. I was changed because side effects were getting worse. Now i dont have the side effects but i am waking several times a night with nausea.Has anyone else experienced this and what can i do. My gp says its the arrythmia.

Your GP might be right. I have had a good deal of nausea over the years since my atrial flutter began in 2019. I have had it before that, too, however, so I tend to think some of us are prone to it. Heart issues seems directly linked to gastric troubles and I never know which is causing what.

In my case, the nausea eventually subsided but it did take some months. No treatments helped. In your case, you might ask about changing to a beta blocker such as bisoprolol instead of the calcium antagonist drugs. That might help.

It's a terrible and debilitating feeling to be nauseous all the time, or in bed when trying to sleep. I recall it well and hope it stays away.

I started arrythmia problems in early 2018. I was getting thumps in my xhest and sore ribs when walking. Also hr would fly off the handle if i pushed biking effort up. Hit 208 bom when chasing down a bunch i knew at one time. That was a bit high for a 76 yr !. Ive just been looking back in a diary to see where im at. It seems ive been putting up with excersise intolerance for nearly 6 yrs !!

You've kept some useful notes, there! I get the chest soreness, too, even without the arrhythmia - just a faster rate, at times.

For the nausea, you might try some Milk of Magnesia. It's a simple thing, but has worked for me at times. Other things to try are sodium alginate mixture (either the cheaper unbranded form or Gaviscon) and bismuth subcarbonate ("Pepto-Bismol"). There are one or two anti-nausea drugs available but they seem to be less prescribed this days owing to side effects (e.g. domperidone, metoclopramide and some antihistamines used for travel sickness).

Hi

Milk of Magnesia is a very ancient formula. I had that from Aged 4 perhaps to aid my ACID STOMACH.

Aged 60 years finally had my Gall Bladder out. IT HAD DISINTEGRATED!

Never looked back.

I understand MOM has alcohol in it!

Hi Joy

I didn't think Milk of Magnesia had alcohol in it. Are you thinking maybe of gripe water? At one time that did. No wonder it helped soothe baby's wind! ;-)

I rate Milk of Magnesia very highly. It's so useful. Taking 2-3 spoonfuls, it soon puts a stop to indigestion, then, upping the dose makes it one of the best laxatives out there.

I will get a bottle of that. Thanks Steve

Hi

Really.

Sounds like a wonder drug.

Haven't had it MOMagnesia since Mum gave it to me.

Yes MOM not gripe water.

So it helps with constipation!!! I have 6 weeks of the state after operations and General anaesthetic.

Thanx. JOY

A small liqueur glass (30-40ml) of Milk of Magnesia taken last thing at night, or just before breakfast, will ensure a gentle and certain arrival into the world of otherwise reluctant objects! And, unlike taking magnesium to stop AF or palpitations... it works every time! ;-)

Hi Im sorry to hear about the nausea.. I get indigestion nausea and heartburn often and sometimes right after taking Diltiazem…

Have you had your liver enzymes checked?

I read that Diltiazem can affect liver function… how long have you been off of it?

I take Gaviscon for the heartburn…

Was going to ask my GP to check my liver enzymes…

Hope you feel better soon!

You say you had side effects from slow release Diltiazem? Have you tried taking Diltiazem immediate release? Works for us... no nausea.

Alphakiwi profile image
Alphakiwi in reply to Unify72

Immediate release i presume are in tablet form which are 30mg and 60 mg. They are no lnger available here in NZ so i am trying the 40mg verapamil x3 per day and 1 at night if needed.

Hi

I take Diltiazem 120mg AM an hour after my Synthroid (thyroxine) no food and Diltiazem no food. I have no problems.

NZ I agree has no 30s or 60s now.

What is you H/Rate? And BP?

Why are you taking a CCB?

Hi

Are you taking PRADAXA? Or another anti-co.agulant?

PRADAXA is twice a day and because of the nature of the capsule could not be breaking down it should with acid.

I take it with a little fruit. My friend was put on a stomach pill.

Not taking pradaxa. I take rivaroxaban. What is a ccb ?

JOY2THEWORLD49 profile image
JOY2THEWORLD49 in reply to Alphakiwi

Hi

CCB Calcium Channel Blocker for my rapid Heart Rate.

You were taking CCB when you took Diltiazem. I was put on that by Mr Brandon WONG. He runs a private practise and came to Kerikeri from Whangarei. If your Dr will refer you his consultation cheaper. He is well known to be 'on to it' saving lives by his diagnosis and introduction to new meds.

At a guess it sounds more likely to be Rivaroxaban. Yes Omeprazol will help.

PRADAXA is great cause you take it twice daily and you can pt for 110mg instead of 150mg twice daily.

Just thinking i have omeprazol here. I wonder if i should take that.

JOY2THEWORLD49 profile image
JOY2THEWORLD49 in reply to Alphakiwi

Hi

Yes but it can interfere with some meds such as thyroid pills.

Look up for contra.... incidences.

I'd be inclined to change to PRADAXA. No nausea with that.

Do you then consider it is the blood thinner that causes me to have nausea at night. I do have some pradaxa here as i think i was on that. Cant think why i would have been changed to rivaroxaban. I went through a period of feeling rotten all the time back in 2019. Its much the same now almost 5 yrs later. Ihad problems taking any tabs and a pm was inplanted with the idea of ablating my av node. After the pm implant it was thought i didnt need the node knocked out.It was before i got the pm i was so bad that my bp was very high. I dont normally have probs with high bp. Anyway at 11 one night i checked my bp twice in 15 mins .I then called ambulance. While being checked in the ambo i flatlined. After beating hell on my chest according to the ambo man in kk hospital i was resusitated. I was sent to whangarei.

I note in my diary of that time it says

.Two pills to avoid - Amioderone + Diltiazem. !!!

I find Rivaroxaban very tolerable, I take it with my last meal of the day (which is early) and it causes no problems. I changed to Apixaban for a while because I read here it was the anti-coagulant of choice for AF, but it gave ne awful heartburn, so I went back to Xarelto or iXorolo as it's called here in Africa, and no problems !

JOY2THEWORLD49 in reply to Alphakiwi

Hi

You really are in a muddle.

Who are you under for your cardiac specialist? Mrs Fisher? Although she changed me to Bisoprolol she left me at 156 uncontrolled heart rate at day!

Stomach problems at night is that after your Riv.......?

Pills get out of date. I get a rash small hard not itchy and now because I have to stop my thyroid pills for this latest nuclear scan I will know whether it's thyroxine or PRADAXA.

I do think it is more likely the Riv.......

But in saying that you do need Dr's OK to get PRADAXA. Get 110mg x twice day. Have with fruit. Without a gall bladder , acid in the form of bile drips in continuously into my stomach.

Do you drink beer at night?

Milk will always sooth your stomach. I take it or icecream after fish and drips. Too much fat overload.

You are in the next main town. I was in Purerua Bay fishing at my friends farm (she died in January). Caught 3 snapper. Last one broke my line. There's always a time to replace it! Yes, too late.

Is your heart problem hypertension or rapid heart rate over 100 at rest?

cheers JOY

Also i meant to tell you yes i am under Raewyn Fisher but before that it was Nigel Lever on the auckland team. I was given over to mrs fisher when she was sent up here i think.Through scanning he found i had a very large left atrium. That may be because i have had a very long active athletic life.

JOY2THEWORLD49 profile image
JOY2THEWORLD49 in reply to Alphakiwi

Hi

The Echo shows that I, too, have a dilated left atrium. Corresponding Right Venticle regurgitation. Soft systollic heart murmur and slight leaky mitral value.

Yes, Dr Fisher is big on tests ECHO, ECG, 24-hr Heart Monitor. But concentratiing on winning on the battle of rapid resting heart rate no good.

I refused her. Saw Dr Chen Whangarei. He was happy rapid now cotrolled so discharged me from outpatients cardiacology unless something hapens untoward.

Took 1 x omaprazole last night. I went right through the night without waking nauseas until 6am. Perhaps i should take another now althogh it says 1 a day on the bottle

JOY2THEWORLD49 profile image
JOY2THEWORLD49 in reply to Alphakiwi

Hi

1 x daily means 1 in each 24 hrs.

Could be gall bladder problems. Or colon/bowel problems. Something you eat regularly at night.

When do you take your Riva....?

cheers JOY

Alphakiwi profile image
Alphakiwi in reply to JOY2THEWORLD49

Take rivarox after tea along with diltiazenNo dont drink beer

Started off Brendon Wong, Diagnosed Aflutter.

No hypertension

Resting hr has always been low

I was put on Digoxin but took me off it after a while. Dont remember why but i seemed ok on it. Was put on rat poison to thin blood before sending me to whangarei to shock my heart back to sinus. Couldnt get the NR stable on that so onto the rivaroxaban. Later i went to Aucks to have pm inplanted. After that on to pradaxa, then at sometime back onto rivarox. Maybe the pradaxa is to costly ?

Allin all it seems i am one of those that doesnt accept drugs well. Hence the pm and possible av node ablate idea. Still got my av node and a fancy pm.

Anyway i shall enquire about the pradaxa.

I have a whole box of them here.

I will now go and take another omaprezole.

Thanks for your kind help. It looks like we have to be our own physicians these days, especially for the fine tuning !

Hi

Brandon Wong was Whangarei Base Hospital but has gone private.

Diltiazem should nt be taken with any other med. Separate by 1 hour AlphaKiwi.

So glad the O.... is working. Gall bladder out solved acid stomach with inflamed gall bladder. 1 dose in 24 hrs remember.

Problem solved!

I had a good Easter fishing. Line broke on the biggest snapper. Need new nylon so I don't lose the prized snapper.

Preparing for a low iodine diet and no thyroxine on 14 April for RAI Scan 8 May. The same day my daughter has her thyroidectomy for cysts now blocking her wind pipe.

Hi Hi Joy and all. Good news. I just could not stand the nausea i have been experiencing for some time especially as i also have a painfull shoulder as well, so i considered it must be a side effect or my body had become intolerant to somethong. I stopped taking the rivaroxaban blood thinner and took pradaxa instead. Nausea got worse, so stopped taking any blood thinner now for 3 days and no nausea. Naturally i will contact doctor on monday about this. They dont know about my experiment. I didnt tell them.

Hi

Perhaps your gall bladder needs removing.

Mine was finally removed at 50 years. It had completely disintergrated! Wonderful relief.

Pity about the PRADAXA.

I'm in UK and was being woken with nausea. Pharmacist said he could not offer assistance if I was getting it during the night and must see GP. I was given omeprazole but when it recurred as soon as I stopped it, I had a gastroscopy and turned out to be gastritis. Treatment -omeprazole. I was anxious to get off omeprazole ( google it!) and have been ok since.

Alphakiwi profile image

BAGRAT, what did you do to get off omaprezole ?

Bagrat profile image
Bagrat

Doc who did gastroscopy said take for 3 months then stop and restart if symptoms returned. ( they did) I know you can get rebound hyperacidity so difficult to judge. I tried again a month later, taking every other day and all well. I don't think that is considered long term. I have friends who've been taking them for years. I have to confess they are still on my repeat prescription list ,I don't re order but they are a bit of a security blanket.!
