I did not know what NOAC stood for either - however towards the top of this page on the righthand side under ‘Pinned Posts’ there is a post called ‘Abbreviations and Acronyms’ and in it I found that NOAC stands for Non-Vitamin K Oral anti-Coagulant (e.g. apixaban).
Not certain but the info was shared with another AFib group and if what I was reading is true, I am no longer destined to a noac for the rest of my life. apparently they have taken out the gender issue. Am waiting to hear more as it filters down to the rest of the medical community.
The European Society of Cardiologists changed their recommendations a couple of years ago to say that anticogulation could be strongly advised when the score reached 3 for women if you had one point for being over 65 and one point for being female ie no comorbidities. My cardiologist told me when my score was 2 that I did not need an anticoagulant as the points were for age and sex. Then I had a suspected TIA and was put on Apixaban.
Hi Katee I looked hard for any recent changes to the CHADS scoring and can't find any.
Some time ago there was a new ruling about CHADS (discussed on here) that stated the 1 point for being 'female' was only to be taken into consideration if you scored other points on the CHADS scale.
So just being 'female' with no other qualifying points scores 0.
