Timing for taking Xarelto

Hi, I always take my Xarelto with my evening meal which I have early. I'm going on holiday, where the evening meals will be at different times, probably a couple of hours later than my usual time - should I be concerned,? I will be away for a month, so is an immediate return to my usual routine advised, or should it be phased in, Thank you.

I don’t think it matters if there is just a couple hours difference.

I would not worry about a couple of hours.

No not for a couple of hours, the best thing is you take with food, there’s been a medical alert issued about taking the 15 mg /20mg with food, as there’s been problems with folks taking it on an empty stomach

It seems that many people with AF have stomach problems!

Heartbeat , you say that there is a connection between taking Xarelto on an empty stomach and gut trouble. Is it necessarily the Xarelto or, could it be the other drugs we With AF take? Ie Digoxin, Losartan potassium?

I was put on Omazeprole which, I think can lower one’s magnesium level , and had a trip into A & E with pulse racing. A magnesium drip brought it down.

This drug taking is a minefield !

But, we have to accept it intelligently.

No,,,no problem with guts.......the blood thinner is not absorbed well on an empty stomach, it needs food if it’s not absorbed well it’s not completing its full action, ie : thinning the blood

Yes my concern is that it is a short acting drug and should be taken at the same time each day with food to be effective as an anticoagulant which is why we take it ! , As I will be away on holiday and eating my evening meal later, would the time difference of possibly 2 hours affect the efficacy of the drug, However thinking logically, it will really only be the first meal that will be out of sync with my usual routine and thereafter for the month I am away I will be taking it at the same time. When I return, I presume I can return to my usual routine without any detrimental effects I hope!!!

Hi We travel quite a lot and I take my xarelto after my evening meal whatever time I happen to eat it and have had no ill effect, even with a 5 hour difference when going across the the Pond.

I came over to da yookay in July and there was a 6 hour time difference from Central time USA.... I just switched to UK time for the Eliquis anti-coag and the beta blocker..Hectic time in Trafalgar Square etc for 3 days (crushed between 1 million lesbians), then back to Heathrow to rent a car and do the south coast...Then back to Chicago for another 6 hours time difference and switching to their local time for the pills.....all in 1 week.. Felt greeeeat like Tony the Tiger...

Thanks everyone. I'm taking a daytime flight from Durban, South Africa to Heathrow (provided the BA pilots aren't on strike!!!!) It's a 12 hour flight leaving at 7.45 arriving 18.55 - so they should give us something to eat reasonably early (they charge enough for business class). Then I will be staying with my sister for a few days (she's also on Xarelto - AF runs in the family) so she'll sync with me, and then I'm taking a coach trip to Ireland and around the British Isles , so I imagine we'll be fed about the same time each day and when I come back to England I will stay with another sister who also has AF!!!, so we'll sync there. This site is so useful with fellow members understanding and help each other, it's so reassuring.

I have always taken my Xarelto in the morning for past year and a half and I’d you find you are going to eating at a different time why not take it at same time you always have taken it but take it with half of banana or some yogurt and not worry about it. I think key here is to always take your meds at same time daily.
