Now 6 weeks post ablation

Hi ....Thankyoufor all posts re insomnia, now back to post ablation.....it is now 6 weeks....and I am still far from feeling back to normal, which maybe I am being too presumptive at the age of 82. If I rest, and don’t do much I am ok, soon asI try to get back to normal shopping , housework etc, I start to get out of breath, feel very very light headed, and quite honestly lousy...it takes about an hour to settle down and my heart to get back to about 72 bpm. Am I being to optimistic that I should by now feeling better than I do.

I left off medication for one day, to see if it made any difference, I am on 2.5 Bisoprolol..40 mg Furosomide and 60mg edoxoban, I did feel better, so Iam wondering if it is that. I had 28 ablations done whilst having the Catheter ablation, is this considerable? Wondering how long it will be before I feel better. Any advice or observations would be great fully received.

As we say in our fact sheet on Recovering from Ablation it takes three to six months for the heart to heal so be patient. Just listen to your body and don't try to beat it.

Trying to be tactful which is not what I’m best known for but an ablation can be quite challenging for some of us 70+ whippersnappers so maybe, just maybe you are expecting too much, too quickly. It wasn’t that long ago that we had posts from patients in their late 70’s/80’s saying that their doctors were reluctant to ablate so it’s good that things have moved on a bit but methinks you need to be a more patient patient even if it’s a difficult pill for you to swallow (and I’m not referring to the Bisoprolol)!

Tinkering with your medication is a big risk during the recovery period (or at any time really) as it gives your heart the support it needs to recover at this crucial time. Feisty is good, but maybe a bit later would be better, you would kick yourself if you ruined all the good work that has been done to improve your quality of life.....

From my experience you are still recovering and need to take it easy, do not irritate your heart as it will take longer to heal. I cannot advise on the medication but if your HR or BP is too high or too low you should speak to the Doc or the Cardiac nurse to see if meds can be tweaked. I am now 5 months post ablation and for there last 2 months have been feeling more like my old self.

It too me 5 months to feel a lot better and almost a year to get resting heartbeat back to normal.

That was 6 years ago and no more AF. It might be worth asking if you could reduce or come off bisoprolol soon as this is known to cause tiredness/ breathlessness.

Good luck and PATIENCE 🍀
