Knee replacement

Hi all. Three weeks ago I had a knee replacement operation and beforehand I was pretty scared that my AF would kick off when I had it done. However, all was well and I only had a couple of short bursts of palpitations in hospital. Even when I was being given a spinal block I managed to stay ok. I’m posting this in case anyone else has an op coming up and is worried.

Thankyou for sharing that! Im going to have my knee replaced on 4/4 and am worried about a fib. I havent had any a fib in almost a year and last fall had 2 surgeries without issue but the knee surgery is a big painful deal. Im happy to hear your heart behaved. How is the knee doing?

Still pretty stiff but healing well. Gruelling but necessary exercises; really glad it’s done!

I have an op coming up and am worried about stopping the Apixaban.... I am in NSR at the moment so I’m hoping that makes a difference. Get well soon with your new knee!

Thank you! I stopped my dabigatran and tried not to think about it. I had Clexane injections whilst in hospital then went back to dabi on day 2. Good luck with your op!

I'm waiting to have my second knee replacement. I've been on the waiting list coming up for 7 months so far! I'm worried re the AF playing up too, especially as I'm getting it around 4 times a month atm. I'm glad yours behaved itself, fingers crossed mine will too!!

Hi there. Thanks so much for posting this. I need a knee replacement, still waiting for the clinic appointment. My GP has taken the wind out of my sails by saying he thinks they might not want to give me the op because I'm in permanent AF, albeit rate and rhythm controlled. I understand it can be done under local anaesthetic/epidural but he doesn't seem to think that makes a difference. I'm just hoping he's wrong as I can't walk very far at all because of the pain in the knee.

I think you’ll find that the consultant will reassure you that all will be well. They look after you and have experience of other patients with AF. At the pre-op assessment you can ask lots of questions about it as well. All the best.

My EP sent a letter saying there was no reason I couldn't be operated on

Thanks again. Three other people I know who've had it done keep telling me to do the exercises before and after.

Yes as my Physio told me 3 times a day

First painkiller then exercises then ice pack!

I am so happy for you that things remained in check, I wish you a speedy recovery and wish you a much more enjoyable life with pain free knee. I as well am on the list for knee replacement, My husband had it done says he should have done it 20 years ago, He would have been free of pain .

Thanks for posting. I'm due for a knee replacement in three weeks. I was hoping to have been ablated on Monday but ended up by being cardioverted as my arrhythmia trequired a more complex ablation that there was time for.

I'm hoping that healty living along with bisoprolol and flecainide will keep my heart in NSR.

Keep up the exercises and Ice, ice, ice!

All the best.

Jan
