Yes, horrible things that cause an early pump on ‘half empty’ followed by a pause and a great wallop on ‘very full’. This uneven pumping causes a feeling of breathlessness.

Ectopic in medical terms means out of place. What happens is that the ventricle contracts before the atrium has passed it any blood so it "pumps" empty and then the next proper one is the thump you feel.
