GA or Sedation

Hi

I have just read a post about this re. Ablation. When I had my ablation I had sedation and couldn't remember anything afterwards. On Monday I will be having a knee replacement surgery and will have to make that choice again. I was thinking of having spinal anaesthetic plus sedation instead of a general anaesthetic

Has anyone had this and if so, how was it? My son keeps trying to persuade me to have a GA but since I found the sedation fine with the ablation I am leaning towards this.

Your experiences please.

A friend had a knee replacement under sedation as she knew she was likely to respond badly to a general An. This was 4 years ago at the Nuffield H. in Oxford ...op was NHS. She was quite satisfied with the sedation.....and the outcome of the knee op.

My sister had sedation and was very comfortable except she was aware of banging, thumping and drilling.

I had GA but my AF may have influenced surgeons decision. I was never asked. End result with both methods was fine.

Thank you both for the replies. .I wonder if the surgeon will suggest GA because of my AF.

It'll be interesting to see what he/she does. I certainly never discussed the matter before surgery so its hard for me to say whether it was a decision the surgeon made based on my AF ( at that time I'd already logged 7 months of being AF free) or whether there was some other underlying surgical reason. Mine was right knee, medial compartment and was a partial knee replacement. My sister on the other hand was a total knee replacement.

Do consider that an ablation and knee surgery are significantly different beasts and knee surgery is seriously, seriously major stuff. Not that ablation isn't.

Anyway, good luck tomorrow and with your post op journey. If you wanna have further conversations after knee surgery get back to me.
