Has anyone had sedation for paradoxal AF ablation, if so how did it go. I'm having it done at Bristol heart institute., Don't go much on how Apixaban make me feel, all of a sudden after 2 weeks of taking them I don't feel that healthy 😣

Haven't heard of this one.....is it for treating Atrial fibrillation ?

Hi Yatsura , yes it is but my ep said they need to go through the right atrium into the left atrium , just hoping sedation is OK and wondering how many people found it ok !!

in reply to Wendus

I've had 2 ablations for AF ....pulmonary vein isolation ....took approx 4 hrs each which of course had to be accessed thtough the right atrium and these were performed under sedation . ( 3rd one ..GA).

I found it a less scary experience than I had anticipated.....my imagination had been really working overtime. Try not to worry too much. You will be nicely sedated and away with the fairies most of the time. You will be able to indicate if you feel pain and you will be 'topped up' with pain killers. The advantage of this over GA is a much quicker recovery.

I would have no problems going through this again if necessary.

Ah thank you for your helpful words, m worried about the nerve they could damage that causes diaghram problems, was you worried about it? How long was your recovery post op? .

I was worried about everything !! ....

I had no problems with recovery. Took it easy for the first week...made sure that my heavier housework was up to date beforehand. Did normal preparation for family meals. Second week able to drive and just careful to do nothing too strenuous. Work up gradually to your normal activities and you should be fine. Just dont get too ambitious too quickly.

I had a Flutter Ablation at the BHI in October under sedation and it was fine, I was quite anxious before hand. At one point during the procedure I moaned as I could feel something and they just topped up the sedation straight away and I didn't feel anything again. The staff were brilliant. As said above take it very very easy for the first couple of weeks.

Good to hear ,where you in any pain after the procedure ? are you pleased with your results ? Did you have paradoxal or permanent Af? I've got to have the left atrium ablated ,so they need to go through the right atrium!! Don't know if this applied to you! How long ago did you have yours done? and how long where you in hospital for?sorry to ask all these questions , just nice to talk to someone who has been there, as you can tell I'm so anxious but so want to be put right . Hope your doing well now 😊

I did originally have AF, but Amiodarone and a cardioversion changed it to Flutter! I had mine done in October 2017, and I was in and out of hospital in a day! Things have been really good since, have had a few ectopics and heart rate up and down a bit but in NSR. At one point my Kardia told me I was in AF but I emailed copies to the Arrhythmia Nurse who emailed me back within 15 mins assuring me that it was ectopics causing the readings of AF and that all looked ok on the ecgs, very reassuring. I also had open heart surgery at the BHI in 2012 and cannot praise the staff enough for the treatment I had then and when I had the ablation and since. You will be in good hands!

Oh and I did have a little bit of pain and soreness in my groin for a few days after, but I think a lot of that was due to the fact that they couldn’t get a cannula into any of my veins so it had to go in my groin as well as the catheters for the ablation. It wasn’t too bad and I didn’t have to take anything to ease it. Don’t hesitate to ask any more questions.

So pleased to hear good reports of BHI. They are my go-to service and so far staff have been Informative and generous with their time to reassure. May end up with ablation there so pleased to hear some success stories.

Sedation is good you come out of it feeling good with no memory of anything unfortunately i only spent a portion of the time sedated the rest i was awake..

They gave me Midazolam Fetanyl and Propofol its way better than a general anaesthetic..

I'm guessing you had Apixapan prior to your procedure, did it make your Af worse with mild chest pain, I don't know if this is one of the side effects, or something else!!! Glad yours went well, can't believe you where awake for some of it, really scared!

No never took Apaxiban yeah mine was a strange one they made me sit on the edge of the cath table and snuck a needle into my canula..

No one else but myself and the anaesthetist in the room what could have been..

I was just about to jump off to stretch my back 1 last time and saw the needle looked around no iv set up i knew i was waking up during the procedure...

The anaesthetist said quick spin around and lay down...

Anyway it was less than 10 seconds i was laying down and off with the fairies...

I had sedation for my cryoablation for AFib in Sheffield. Procedure lasted just over 2 hours. All I remember is being cold in the cath lab as they said the equipment worked better in the cold! No pain or discomfort afterwards, felt better than I would have with a general anaesthetic! You'll be fine. I was also on Apixaban before and after the procedure with no side effects.

Thank you for making me feel less anxious , how are you now and how long was your recovery ?

I had an overnight stay in hospital, nothing went wrong, they told me I'd be in overnight before I had the procedure. I had 4 weeks off work, I still felt tired for a couple of months afterwards but now I'm off all meds and haven't had any AFib since the ablation last May and feel great! I know we all have different experiences but I feel I'm very lucky having gone from AFib episodes 5-6 times per week some lasting 12 hours plus to being AFib free. BTW I'm in my early 50s and had AFib for around 9 years before my ablation.

I did experience a terrible 'ice cream' headache during the ablation but they just gave me more sedation. I also remember them giving me the hiccups to test there was no damage to my diaphragm but it's been totally worth it to get the result I have! If I need another ablation in the future I wouldn't hesitate, whereas when first diagnosed I said there's no way I'm ever having an ablation! Really hope you get the result I've got.
