Anybody tried Chair based fitness exercises for starter to new year resolution?

Apart from gentle walking on my somewhat wobbly legs (meds include heart rate and rhythm control, BP meds and steroids for IBD amongst others, some of which make one a little slow and unstable) I am contemplating attending a chair fit course (exercises to work on core muscles and stamina levels whilst sitting down) to get some regular routine to my fitness regime. Have had a bit of a tough time last few months with more frequent bouts of AF and a lengthy IBD flare up. Advice on exercise has been a bit vague from my med team, varying from "a lot of rest" to "do as much as you can", "listen to your body", "what works for you" and "that sounds like a good idea" . Any other ideas on how to get some strength back into my arms and legs (and shift the odd pound) without bringing on AF/Flutter most gratefully received. BTW 75 years young and until a year ago, fairly fit.

You have nothing to lose except some weight.I go to a seniors exercise class where two of the participants are chair based for most of the exercises ......I can rec. it .The chair based people get up and are spurred on for a couple of the exercises by seeing our activity....and maybe you can graduate by holding a wall or a chair for some of the activities so your balance is less compromised and you get wider stretches.

Here goes nothing to lose! Thanks for the encouragement. I reckon nothing ventured nothing gained and doing nothing is not an option. Thanks for the encouragement.

There is a 10 minute chair based exercise video on the British Heart Foundation website, maybe you could have a go at that to see whether you feel it might benefit, though I think exercisng in a group is preferable for all sorts of reasons. I am hoping to join a starter Tai Chi group this year, my balance is poor but I hope to improve it.

Ok, Ok. Viewing the heart foundation video and some other clips and done a bit of leg waggling after your instructions! My excuse for next week's starting date is instructor is taking a break until then and I thought Buffafly's comment about group exercise was a good one, adds an element of fun and sociability to it. (excuses, excuses) But you are right, "don't put off til tomorrow...…." is a better maxim than "tomorrow is another day." Thank you for the encouragement and a Very Happy New Year to you too.

Good Chap.... now if you used a bit of imagination you could be up and running

in a couple of weeks, maybe trotting round the block within a month (or is that too

ambitious ?). All the best to you, I am interested in hearing how you progress. Please keep me informed.

Tai Chi is good for core, breathing, arms and legs and especially balance. You can go at your own pace and i have heard of Tai Chi chair based classes. Good luck.

No worries. You may also consider QiGong. Again focus is on stretching and breathing with a bit of meditation thrown in. Perserverance is key as is an open mind.
