Nolotil painkiller warning

Spanish Health Authorities have advised that this painkiller should not be used because of potentially lethal side effects on north Europeans. The side effect involves destruction of white blood cells, leading to sepsis . I believe this drug is banned in UK but it is still prescribed in Spain

We spend several months of the year in Spain and have found the healthcare excellent. But yes, this is widely prescribed and we have our own supply of painkillers for emergencies.

On another note, I am sure there must be a standard on the supply of drugs which are normally prescription only. But it depends on the pharmacy. At most pharmacies in the nearest town to us (in rural Southern Spain) I can pick up amlodipine, warfarin and bisoprolol over the counter without any questions. All I do is show the empty English tablet packets.

Hi, I live in Spain and my partner was recently admitted to hospital and prescribed Nolotil. Luckily he knew about the danger and refused it. We know because someone we know was prescribed it and died from sepsis. A warning to anyone travelling or living in Spain. Nolotil isn't a problem to people of Spanish descent but to Northern Europeans, it can be dangerous.
