Does anyone on here suffer with atrial flutter, I see a lot of posts about Afib but not so much about afl? X

Yes I have atrial flutter as well as atrial fibrillation and Multifocal Atrial Tachycardia. Hopefully I don’t get anymore crazy arrhythmias 🤪🤪

How often do you get episodes of the flutte and are you on medication for it? X hope you don’t mind me asking a few questions 😂

I was hospitalised in April with my first episode of Atrial Flutter - I had a cardio version after 3 days with my heart rate of 150bpm that extra medication wouldn’t fix. Six weeks later I went back into atrial flutter for a few hours then it changed to AFib. I’m on Sotalol 120mg morning and night. I’m also on anticoagulants. I was supposed to have ablations for the flutter and AFib on Friday but the procedures were aborted when they found a clot in my heart (I’ve written a few posts about that over the last few days)

I had my first episode of atrial flutter about 5 weeks ago now ( at least the first that was caught on ecg!) heart rate was 150 but after about 2-3 hours it went back into nsr on its own. My referral appt is not until October now so left worrying about when the next episode might happen it’s awful!! X

The worst thing you can do is worry. Stress is bad for your ♥️. I’m in Australia and so I’m not reliant on the NHS. I have my cardiologist on speed dial 😀. From everything I’ve read (and believe me I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately) Atrial flutter, whilst very unpleasant is not as dangerous as many other arrhythmias.

How are you today Kaz?

Not too bad baba, thanks. I’ve had a headache all day but that may be from changing meds again. I went out for a walk in the fresh air (and rain) ☔️ this afternoon. Trying to keep up some exercise but trying not to overdo it.

Lotty, why not try telling yourself that you may not get another attack, if at all, for a year or more. I had quite a gap between my first and second episode . Some never get a second one !

Hello Lotty... I had an ablation almost 8 weeks ago and my flutter was “fixed” fingers crossed 🤞... The afib is still lurking but I’m hoping it will settle down as it’s still early days... there is such a difference between the 2! Quite significant!

Hi in what way do you find them quite different? X

I had AF diagnosed and ablated in 2013/14 and then in 2016 I had episodes of atrial flutter, which weren't too dissimilar to how I felt being in fast AF, bit easier to cope with the symptoms but still at times quite awful.

These were also treated with ablations, 2 of them on the right of the heart where they found altered heart tissue causing the problem fairly close to the pherenic nerve.

More recently the fast AF has returned and at last consultation they couldn't say if the original fast AF had caused the flutter or the flutter had caused the AF to return.

I had flutter which was fixed by an ablation. The EP told me that it is a straightforward process usually, compared to Afib which can occur inside the heart in areas which are difficult to get at. I suggest you enquire about getting an ablation?

I had flutter which woke me every night last summer, then went into AF in November, admitted to hosp and all my drugs changed. Now on Sotalol 80mg twice daily which has 'cured ' the flutter, still get short runs of Af but am now on the waiting list for pulmonary vein isolation/ganglionic plexi ablation. Can't wait!!!

Hi Lotty,

I have been diagnosed with AF and possible (they’re not sure if it’s just AF or both) AFib. Have had two particularly bad episodes this year which both resulted in me passing out and falling, injuring my face both times.

First time was in February which resulted in me being admitted to hospital for 3 weeks while they monitored me and played with drugs which could not get it under control, my HR at rest was 90-100 but as soon as I left the bed it would shoot up to 180-190 and I would feel as if I were going to pass out, the highest seen was 260 when I actually did! They finally got it down low enough where they were happy to Cardiovert me. I was sent home on 2.5mg of Bisoprolol and Apixaban. All was well until early May when I had a further falling episode and was sent to hospital again. This time they (as I had been on the Apixaban for months) Cardioverted me straight away. I was sent home again on 5mg Bisoprolol, Apixaban and Doronderone(sp?). The latter gave me an horrendous rash so was discontinued.

My Cardiologist has now said that he wishes to review me as a matter of urgency as he considers me an urgent candidate for an Ablation. I’m still waiting but fingers crossed all is fine at the moment. AF is apparently much more successfully treated by ablation but they are still not sure if I also hav AFib.

I hope you get a good diagnosis and treatment soon.

As everyone on here understands, the main trigger/cause is the anxiety which is so difficult to avoid. Try not to worry too much!

Sorry for the mammoth post but hope it helps you a bit!

I had right atria reentrant atrial flutter for 3 weeks in February 2018 which was stopped by an ablation on the 26th Feb. I was advised that the ablations for this are 95% succesful and do not return.

How were you able to get your abliation so quickly? It seems to take forever we have to wait for testing and appointments.

Reason is I had only had an AF ablation on 29th January which I waited for from July 2017.

I did not have A flutter. I had the cryo PVI ablation for AF , a week off work and I went back to work and 2 days later A flutter kicked in. So I went back to the EP who got me in a week after to discuss with his registrar and do ecg, and then dealt with it to fix it a couple of weeks later. The registrar did the ablation not the EP as it is a simpler less risky procedure ( I was told).

I was already been anti- coagulated since 4th January and everything that had to be considered had already been done for the first ablation., so I suppose it was easier to arrange.

Hi Lotty... my experience of flutter is having a very strong very fast very regular heart rate and my afib is currently very fast (145/150) but very jittery - thumping and crashing around my chest ...

Yes, I was diagnosed with atrial flutter in January and had my ablation in March. For a couple months afterward I would feel like skipped beats occasionally but that seems to have settled down. When I originally went to the doctor with a high pulse I was put on a heart monitor for a week and results came back that my heart was fluttering 92% of the time instead of beating correctly. So, they immediately put me on Eliquis and got me in for my ablation rather quickly. I am still on Eliquis which I would like to come off of but am not sure about.
