I have read that eating a handful of nuts daily is good for the heart. Is there a scientific basis for this claim?Walnuts and almonds seem to be the preferred candidates, but does anyone have any specific recommendations? At the moment I have started eating 30g of Sainsbury’s organic walnuts every day.

Nuts for the heart
Nuts contain many minerals and some of these are good for the heart
I have eaten nuts every day since an adult The fat in nuts is vegetarian fat and 'said' to be better for health than animal fat but that depends on your point of view. You can easily access mineral content of various nuts online.I eat all nuts but have personal flavour preferences.
Nuts are a magnesium rich food and low magnesium levels can trigger heart rhythm problems. I regularly eat almonds and use almond milk in my blueberry and banana smoothies.
Hazelnuts are particularly useful in protecting thr heart, but I cant remember why!! Obviously not that good for memory!!!!
Hi Samazeuilh there was a Swedish study linking nuts and Afib..
[''quote =In a large study, Swedish researchers found that eating nuts three or more times a week was associated with an 18% lower chance of having AFib. It also helped cut the odds of heart failure.]

Hi Samazeuilh,
Yes, there are many good studies in the "Journal of Internal Medicine" indicating the health benefits of eating a small handful of nuts daily.
1) All type of nuts (Legumes) are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids which are very beneficial to your Cardiovascular health .
2) Nuts contain a fair amount of protein, fats and carbs ,the three essentials food group for good health.
3) Nuts are a good source of Zinc, Magnesium, and lots of other minerals which are necessary for our normal bodily functions.
Hope this helps.
Hi
i have recently had enormous cravings for cashew nuts; lately I have been taking magnesium supplements (long story) and the craving has subsided.
Been told I was a terrible picky eater as a tot. I loved milk n bananas. Mother was asked by MD "so what are you worried about?"
Thanks to all those who have replied on this thread. I have decided to stick with walnuts as they are quite tasty and, apparently, good for the brain as well as the heart. I discovered that the American Heart Association recommends
1.5 ounces of nuts, 4 times per week.
