Blood blister
Hi Vonnieruth,
Just to try and reassure you - I've been taking Apixaban for nearly 3 years and it's been okay. Compared to Warfarin (which caused a number of issues for me), the Apixaban just seems to do what it's supposed to do and most of the time I'm not aware of it. Think I probably bruise more easily, have had the odd blood blister, and occasionally if I really knock my hand I might get bruising in a small vein - but on the whole, it's okay. I had a lot of problems with Warfarin, so the Apixaban seems like a bit of a blessing, although obviously I wish I didn't have to take it at all!
Hope that might give you a bit of reassurance. Good luck.
Thank you I know I'm being silly Just I went sick when I saw it this morning and it's not that big really
Not silly at all. Jem is right-probably nothing and sometimes we bruise on anticoagulants. But you are smart to notice even small bodily changes and look for a reason they are there. Most of the time changes most likely are harmless. But sometimes they're not. Vigilant patients who are aware of changes usually notice them first and if they are problematic get better care when called to their doctor's attention early. Always better safe than sorry. I had problems in the past with both Pradaxa and warfarin. Got my Watchman device fitted this past January. So no more anticoagulants. Doing well and happy I did it. Take care. irina
Thanks I have been discharged by hospital so still werry I guess I will get use to this apexiban I know
Can I ask what a watchman device is please?
Current thinking states that most clots associated with atrial fibrillation originate in the left atrial appendage which is a small extension off our left atrium. It's much like our appendix is a small pocket of tissue off our large colon (bowel). There is a procedure that occludes tho LAA opening so blood cannot be exchanged with the left atrial blood thus not allowing clots to pass through. This occlusion can be accomplished in several ways and there are several devices throughout the world used to occlude the opening. One is called a Watchman device (popular in the US), There are certain criteria that you must have to qualify. Please talk with an Electrophysiologist about this rather than a reg cardiologist or a GP as the EP does the procedure. It is done through cardiac catheterization so no opening the heart is necessary. The procedure is designed to eliminate the need for anticoagulants. Worth googling Watchman procedure or Left atrial appendage occlusion. Hope this helps. Take care. irina
Thank you so much irina, it’s something I’d never heard of before. I have such problems tolerating anticoagulants! I’m 56 years old now with a chadsvasc =1 so my EP just wants me to take them for 6 weeks post ablation at the moment which is proving very difficult! If I have to take them permanently at a later date it is definitely something I will enquire about. Thanks again for the info.
You're very welcome. I did my own INR's weekly at home for several years and managed my own warfarin doses. But it was a harsh drug with lots of side effects. My feelings about taking some of the newer anticoagulants are that first they are new enough, in my opinion, for the jury to still be out about them, and second, I liked the control that the warfarin testing gave me. I could always gauge where my clotting level was. But I am happy to be off the meds and the procedure (in January 2018) has worked out well for me. Worth a consult if you're interested. I recommended talking to the EP as often cardiologists and GP's don't know or have experience with the pros and cons of the procedure and I find people often can be biased against subjects they are not very familiar with.
Hi Vonnie my guess is that you have bumped yourself without realising it.
I have had a few odd things since being on Apixaban including a very blood shot eye that looked really gruesome, large bruises and a couple of blood blister type things one where a shoe had been rubbing. They all got better quite quickly.
Try not to be anxious but if it is really bothering you check it out with the doctor.
Going to see Clinique nurse tomorrow I have a feeling it may have been my comb the other day my hair is over my ears so normally would have seen it except I put it behind ear while I did makeup
Vonnie I have a stunningly beautiful bruise on my left thigh all black and yellow heaven knows where it came from , as long as AF behaves itself I don't mind.
I was going to say that Vonnie, maybe brush or comb, I’ve done the same. Just keep an eye on it and try not to touch it too much - easier said than done! x
I will Hilly Silly me I know Think the first incidents always the worse no matter how small it is Hope all is well with you Not chatted for a while
I felt very nervous of Apixaban to start with Vonnie. Scared to go out in the car, scared to chop onions, you name it. And I had a near miss when an idiot drove through a red light at 50mph and that nearly did it for me. Then I learned that Apixaban is nearly as safe as aspirin and much better at preventing strokes. Just feel lucky to have it now. Hope you’re feeling much better now x
Yer feeling ok now Hilly was a shock when I saw it this morning Lucky my hair covers it You took your pic off profile
Yes, changed my pic but the writing's so small you can't read it. It says "I am not afraid of storms, for I'm learning how to sail my ship" it's from little women. Thought it was apt but might change it back to the old one again soon. Glad you're feeling better now 😊
Had to jump in. I have a cap (usually for bad hair days). Outside it says "Trust Your Journey" Inside it has the Little Women saying you mentioned about not being afraid of storms. I ordered it from a catalog (hazelden.com) if memory serves but I bet if you google the sayings you will find all kinds of products with these quotes. I enjoy wearing my opinions at times. One of my favourites is "Not all who wander are lost." Take care. irina
Your cap sounds great, just my sort of thing ... I'm quite envious I love quotes from literature x
