Well I’m back in af after 3 days of normality. Disappointed to say the least.

Commiserations. I’m sure that it’s a big disappointment but , from what I read here, it seems that’s a CV is only ever a temporary reprieve. I hope you don’t have to wait too long for your next ablation and hope that it is more successful than your last ones. 🙂

While cardioversion may not be a permanent cure, as with ablation, it is a fairly simple and low risk technique that shouldn't be dismissed entirely. I had a CV in June 2015 after six months of very dibilitating AF, and, fingers crossed, I'm still in NSR over 3 years later. I did have a period of intense ectopics soon after (bigeminy), which was almost as bad as the AF, but that gradually self-righted.

The chances of success are likely linked with whatever caused the AF in the first place and that's often not known. I was told by an EP that the longer we stay out of AF then, as the damage done is given a chance to repair, the more likely NSR is to continue. I hope he's right.

So good luck to anyone who has had a CV recently, and particularly to Redders.

That's good news Redders. We're all rooting for you.

After the CV, I gave up alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods completely, had fewer late nights, and anything else that might just give it a better chance. You may have already done the same. I don't know if any of it made the slightest difference but I like to pretend it might have.

Now all resumed in moderation.

Lol well I don’t drink any alcoholic but occasionally have a cappuccino but mainly decaf tea and juice. I do have trouble sleeping though as just can’t switch off my brain. Best wishes and keep healthy. Val

I had cv day after you & was told by cardiologist to not even drink decaf !

My last cv lasted 2.5 years with no meds & think caffeine put me back in af

Decaf tea has caffeine in it but just not as much as regular full caffeine tea.

Also, just FYI, for whatever reason, even decaf tea can send me into the flutters after just a sip or two and long before the caffeine has had a chance to go to work in my system. Not sure if it is something else in the tea or if it is the hot liquid but I just gave up on tea altogether.

I may try iced tea in the near future to see if it was the fact that the liquid was hot or if it was something else with the tea itself.

A whole lot of trial and error with all of this. Lol

Before my cardioversion, when I was still in AF I drank latte and cappuccino and I was fine ( probably because I was already in AF ) but just before I went back into AF on Saturday I had drunk earl grey tea so maybe I’ll stop all tea and coffee. No alcohol either. Lol Keep well Val

Hi Ruffity,

As much as I appreciate everybody is different when it comes to matters of the heart. Could I please ask you if your AF was persistent or paroxysmal? I underwent a CV procedure on the 3rd July after approximately 18 months of being in persistent asymptotic AF and I'm trying to get a feel for how long I could be in NSR before flipping back into AF; or if indeed I stand a chance of staying in NSR for an extended period. Thanks in advance and I look forward to hearing from you or anybody else that has had experience of persistent asymptotic AF and has undergone Cardioversion.

Hello Billiam54 not sure if your message was for me or Ruffity but I was in permanent AF since January until I had a cardioversion last Wednesday. Flipped back into AF yesterday (Saturday) but reverted back today which I was so pleased with. My previous cardioversions didn’t last more than a few weeks but got my fingers crossed for this one. Sorry to hear that. Same happened to me though did last an extra day. Put on a drug regime for three months then tried again. Still all good after four months. Stay strong and good luck.

Sounds very positive, back in NSR on your own! If I go into afib, I require cardioversion☹️ I would be super excited if I converted on my own. I take every single precaution and then some. Never been much of a alcohol consumer, but I have had in the past years some episodes of heart palpitations after a drink at dinner, no longer consume ANY. For me, I am totally certain it is a trigger. I so understand your disappointment, I just almost flip out when my a-fib comes from nowhere, dread the drill of ER and cardioversion....wish you the very best. Keep us posted.
