Failed second cardioversion

I had my second cardioversion today and it didn’t work. I’m being referred to an EP. looking for advice on what to ask about abalation. What are the risk or rewards. This site has always had good advice. I am just completely disappointed about today. So any advice is welcomed.

You will have to see what your EP says but here in UK - I’m guessing you are in US? a failed cardioversion indicates that ablation is unlikely to be successful, so sorry to say that as you were obviously looking for hope.

If you are considered for an ablation ask what EP thinks success rate may be - and then do your homework and check it out. Ask what type of ablation - risks etc. there is a question list on the AFA site so print out and take with you. Also read all the information from the AFA website before you go.

It is good you have been referred to an EP - just wondering why you haven’t been previously?

Best wishes.

Yes I’m in the US. I am not sure why I haven’t been referred to an Ep. if ablation is not an option what do I have to look forward to. What would be my options.

EP’s are the specialist cardiologists for arrythmias and therefor best placed to advise on your options - eg I am waiting on a Pace and Ablate procedure which although won’t stop the AF it can reduce the effect of the symptoms in a large percentage of people with little or no alternative options available.

All treatments are to improve quality of life and you are very lucky if you strike a treatment which works - but there are no guarantees that would continue to work.

In my case - 2 failed ablations, unable to take any rate control meds or rythm control (they are ineffective anyway for me now).

I'm no expert but it all depends if your symptomatic or not ? If you are I would think they would suggest a pace maker

I also had two cardioversions which didn't work for me, so had ablation which has worked for me so far ,best of luck with what you decide,!!
