Apixaban at 80 and reducing dose.
I think it is more a case of the extra risks as one ages rather than decreased risk from taking the lower dose. . Life is about risk management and some clever people must have consideedr this situation or there would not be an age related change.
As I understand it, the reduction is due to the effect the ageing process might have on kidneys and the liver which also effects the efficiency of Apixaban. It would probably be better to speak to your doctor for clarification if you are concerned as we are not medically trained.
As previous person said it’s about balancing risk - the risk of a bleed vs stroke. As we get older, the bleed risk increases so a reduction in anticoagulants is considered prudent. That’s my understanding but I’m no expert.
wish there was a straight answer to this issue (dose/age). I am 80 this year, thankfully no AF for many months and thinking of changing my dose to 2.5 daily vs the 5. I would prefer to go back to adding some fish oil/garlic etc to my diet as they have other good purposes for my health
