GI problems are linked to AF so you need to look at your diet and what causes your rumblings. Search out the Dr Gupta video on AF and gastro problems - he held a conference on this subject in May.

One thing that really helps me is to sip hot water, plain ordinary hot water first thing, before anything else.

Stop eating any bread or cereals at breakfast and incorporate kefir into eating plan - I make my own water kefir as I can’t tolerate much dairy. I am gluten free and recently started the FAST diet - Dr Mosley - and I am SO much better.

No - it’s not about dieting per se but more about eating sensibly and nutritionally smart and taking care of the gut and the biodome within.

I would recommend Dr Chaterjee’s The Four Pillar Plan.

I consult with a nutritionalist as everyone has different requirements and you need to do your own research.

I started by keeping a very detailed diet/symptom diary and looking at the correlation between all symptoms (not just AF) and what I ate. As we are all very different there really is no easy - follow that plan method - you do need to put in the work yourself. I found I had certain nutritional deficiencies so I supplemented for those and a high correlation between dairy and gluten products so completely cut them out. Others find nightshades a problem etc, etc.

There are some essentials though common to all dietary advice -

Eliminate ALL processed foods.

Fast for at least 12-15 hours in any 24 hour period and try to go 4 hours between eating

Drink at least 2L of plain, still water a day.

Eat small meals and the last meal of the day should be at least 4 hours prior to going to bed.

Eat a diet very high in green, leafy vegetables, oily fish, low in carbohydrates and try to make those carbs starch resistant - eg - cold potatoes, pasta etc.

Limit red meat to once a week and have white fish at least once a week.

Eat plenty of legumes, nuts and a small amount of fresh fruit.

Hope that provides a starting place for you.

Best wishes

Stress can be the cause of those symptoms too 😧

Just to give you a choice/confuse you, two suggestions:

FODMAP diet for IBS (you can download an app) Also general instructions for IBS available on NHS website.

Follow instructions for flare up of diverticulitis, good for any temporary tummy upset: A day or two of clear fluids, followed by a couple of days of low fibre foods, then gradually return to normal avoiding very fatty or fibrous food.

However, I should have first said that any persistent change of bowel function should be investigated by a doctor before trying any kind of diet change, dreadful warning alert!! - I refused said investigation because of all the usual reasons/excuses and nearly lost a large portion of bowel because I developed diverticulitis 😱

Try peppermint eg as a tea or a supplement. This should calm and relax the digestive system. Ginger is good too, but it is best taken only as a tea as too much may cause our blood to clot less easily, so it is best not mixed with an anticoagulant.

Also take probiotics (from a health food shop). The kefir, if it is 'live', will contain similar microbes but far fewer. Antiobiotics kill off all our natural healthy gut bacteria which allows the unhealthy ones to proliferate, and so it is vital that the healthy ones are replaced.
