Recurrent Afib while on Flecainide

Already messaged my cardiologist, but wanted to know if anyone else has had any flare ups of Afib while on Flecainide? It was minor, only lasted about 15-20 seconds, but noticeable. 100mg 2x daily. Thanks everyone.

I restarted on flecanide after a good few months AF free in 2016, then I was told 50mg x2 a day was making my atrial flutter worse - so A&E stopped it. I had a flutter ablation in September 2017 and it was restarted. But I needed a further one in December 17 and then I stopped everything only for it to come back a couple of months ago and now I'm on it yet again with 1 more episode since then.

I have been on Flecainide for many years and throughout I continued to have AF from time to time. Each time I either took Flecainide as PIP or was given a cardioversion.

I note that the AF you experienced lasted 15-20 seconds. This has also happened to me but to be honest I did not consider it to be a full AF attack and just carried on living my normal life.

Personally I would recommend you don’t worry about this at all as I don’t think it is significant.

I agree with pottypete (which is not unusual). Most AF folk experience short runs of rapid heartbeat and/or ectopics or palpitations. We tend to notice them more because we have become far more sensitive to changes in our heartbeat. I think much the same happens to “normal” people too. Try drinking more water.......

Thanks, I was just wondering why it would happen while taking medication to prevent it.

I think you should take the view that Flecainide is designed to minimise AF not necessarily prevent it. I take the view that my condition would be far worse if I did not take Flecainide.

Roger that pottypete. Thank you for that insight.

I am on 50mg b.d and then take up to 300mg during an episode. I am in AF on 3or 4 days a week - lasting from 30 minutes to 36 hours. I am not sure it is doing much but will discuss it further with my EP at my appointment in October.
