AFIB, Eliquis and Gout

I was diagnosed with permanent AFIB in October 2017 after my resting heart rate skyrocketed to 140 bpm. I am taking Metoprolol and Eliquis for treatment. My resting heart rate is now 65 bpm according to my Fitbit. I have no symptoms other than feeling slightly tired sometimes.

I have suffered with gout for over 20 years and I used to take Ibuprofen to treat any flair ups that I have. I started taking allopurinol about 5 years ago and haven't had a severe gout attack during that time until this past week. The gout attack that presented was severe and I could barely walk for about one week.

My question: Since I can't take ibuprofen anymore because of the Eliquis, what can I take to treat a gout flair up? I tried Tylenol and it was useless and provided no relief. Any help by way of comments will be appreciated. I am scheduled to visit my EP Dr. again in July 2018 and was hooping to hear how other AFIB patents treat their gout flareups.

Cider vinegar? I take 2 tblspn plus 2 teaspn honey in warm water first thing in the morning.

By the way. studies have shown that ibuprofen is a cause of AF.

That's just my luck. I've taken more ibuprofen in my life due to gout than I care to mention.

Don't beat yourself up. It is only in the last three of four years that this have been known. I had my fair share over the years.

James, I've been taking Eliquis for the past several years. I also suffer from gout on occasion. I have not experienced any difficulties taking ibuprofen during these attacks. I've read that taking the two meds however, may result in bleeding. Since I have not seen any indication of bleeding with Eliquis alone I used Ibuprofen as I noted, but if you have not yet seen your doctor I would discuss this with him or her.

I take Pradaxa as an anticoagulant, also Metoprolol, and diltiazem. I can take only Tylenol for pain. I would seek your doctors advice before taking anything other than Tylenol because of the real risk of bleeding. These drugs are doing a very good job of controlling my AFib as it has been more than a year since an event. Sorry I have no history of gout so cannot comment on that

What pain can I ask you get please

I get swollen red joints, normally in my big toe but sometimes in my ankles. It hurts so bad that I can't walk without severe pain.

My story is very similar, gout for 20 years, now on eliquis. I suspect my DVT may have been caused by gout restricting my motion because I can't walk when I get a bad one.

I avoided colchicine until now. The Dr. suggested it again and I tried it because I was afraid of ibuprofen . It worked very fast to reduce swelling and pain. However you need to take it within 36 hours of the first sign of attack.

You will probably get diarrhea from colchicine but man - compared to gout - an extra run to the toilet was worth it.

I too suffered gout attacks. They began after I suffered 8 mosquito bites to my ankles a few years back. I was given Colchicine 0.6mg and instructed to take 1 tablet each day until the

gout was better. I found it caused diarreah, so had to be careful taking it. I also was given Allopurinol to take to keep my uric acid level lower. The gout attack was severe and my left knee was so swollen I could not get out of bed one morning, plus I had it in my right foot and had to use crutches to get around until it subsided with cold compresses and Tylenol. I used o take aspirin for osteo arthritis, etc. but when I was Rxed Elequis, I was told I could NOT take aspirin anymore and found Tylenol does nothing to help inflammation from osteo arthritis. I now find I cannot take anything but Tylenol or Tylenol 2 as Ibuprofen and Naproxine/Aleve push my blood pressure up to over 200. I hope your gout disappears for good, as it is a horrible and painful thing to endure.

Thanks for the reply. I hope you continue to find relief. My doctor finally prescribed Allopurinol and this drug has been a life changer for me. I suffered with gout for years but haven't had a gout attack in some time now.

X-Rays suggested that it could be calcium crystals, but so far the Rheumatologist took a sample of fluid from my knee when it was slightly swollen, but nothing confirmed, as so I continue with the Allupurinol. Note: CPPD was suggested in a 2017 X-ray.
