Ablation tomorrow.....

My comined ablation for flutter and afib is scheduled for tomorrow . In between the normal bouts of thinking about the proceedure I'm trying to get as organised as possible.

I'm sure I read that someone had taken in a bottle of water to drink if they got thirsty during the proceedure. I'm wondering how this would work as during my previous ablation I'm sure I was told to lie completely still. Did I get this wrong?

Once the taxi drops me hospital I'll be on my own so need to plan as much as possible in advance-my partner has his own health issues and will be staying at home.

Any advice welcome- so long as it doesn't require anything not available at our local convenience store!

Thanks,

Thanks! Will post again once I'm home.

hi ijan, I doubt you will have a chance to drink anything DURING the procedure as hopefully you will either sparko or at least, fairly well sedated. The water will come in useful once you have returned to the ward tho, although in my case, water was freely available but better to be prepared. You need to think about getting home after discharge as they may not let you go home on your own. Certainly you should not carry anything when leaving the hospital and going up 'n down stairs is to be avoided as this could damage the wound. If you have an iphone, pad or some other gizmo it might help to listen to music or maybe watch a download while you lie still, but please take earplugs so as to not disturb the others in the ward. Not much time to suggest much else, so hope all goes well and please let us know how you you get on.....coming home on your own should be avoided and it is important to do as little as possible for two weeks. I appreciate that this may be difficult, but it is important otherwise you could put all the work to risk of failure.....best of luck......

Thanks for the informative reply. Water for after the event makes much more sense. I have friends coming to pick me up- the main problem will be taking it easy when I get home as my "other half" is not as aware of others' needs as he was before his brain injury.

I'm pretty well organised and have friends looking in on him while I'm in hospital and on us both once I'm home.

Thanks again,,,,,I'll keep you all posted:)

Water from a cup with a straw not really recommended when you are lying flat so the water bottle is essential! Best wishes 🙂

I've put a bottle in my bag!

They put me totally out during my ablations in US. Even if they didnt doubt they would want you moving with catheters in you do precision burning.

Yoi’re absolutely right. I realise now that the poster was suggesting a water bottle for after the procedure.

Waiting for proceedure- happy to have support from so many kind folk.

Thanks

Update.....Procedure cancelled at 1.00pm. !

I think a key person from the lab had to go home poorly. So rustled up a lift home and am feeling rather surreal sitting on my sofa instead of starting my recovery.

C'est la vie!

After my ablation I had to lie flat, with my head back, for a few hours. But the nurse helped me drink some juice through a straw. I thought it tasted absolutely amazing, but I was pretty high on diamorphine at that point. You definitely can't drink during the procedure itself.

I had to stay for an extra night, 2 nights in total. So worth making sure you have enough to read, battery chargers etc, just in case you are there longer than you expect.

I was expected to have someone collect me the morning after the ablation, but because I stayed an extra night they didn't seem bothered how I left the next day! I guess the catheter insertion spot had healed sufficiently by then.

Good luck.

Thanks Shaun, I'm back at home having been "gowned up and ready to go" from 8.00am untill 1.00pm when a lovely apologetic nurse came to tell me my proceedure had been cancelled because a key technician had gone home, poorly.

Can't be helped, but frustrating none the less.

Hope everything went well. I am 2 1/2 weeks out from my ablation for SVT. This forum has been really nice to have as a support system because so many people have gone through the same thing.

Thanks! Unfortuately my procedure was cancelled this afternoon so I'm waiting for another date. I feel the same about this forum- so many caring people prepared to offer support and advice makes a big difference.

I hope your recovery goes smoothly!

Thanks to everyone who offered advice and wished me luck.

Unfortuately my procedure was cancelled this afternoon so I'm waiting for another date.

I'm leaving my bag packed, and have the benefit of all the helpful advice, so should be well prepared when my next date comes round.
