After having a medical and finding afib present in Italy I came home and paid privately for more investigations and was told left atrium enlargment ,a fib and mitral valve leak but was mild ,I was put on beta blocker and anticoagulant and told to come back for a scan in three years to see if any change ,while I was back in Italy I called on a doctor for a scan and he said we need to keep a check on this and said a new scan in 6 months to see what is happening then a scan every 12 months if things are ok seems a big difference in the treatment we get in U.K. then in Europe

Could it be that doctors in Italy like getting paid to do more - whether it is necessary or not? More scans doesn't necessarily equate to better care.

If you are talking about echocardigram this is a very subjective test depending to a great extent on the skill or otherwise of the operator. Yes AG will tend to cause left atrial enlargement but f your symptoms are controlled this is likely to reverse rather than get worse. Mitral valve regurgitation (leak) is very common and cane be termed "trace", "mild", "moderate" etc. and this is where variation will occur. Two different operators doing an echo on the same day may say either trace or mild for the same amount. I believe that our good Dr Sanya Guta did a video on this very subject a while back. One should not get too hung up on these results in other words.

Here in UK NHS works wonders for most people and my experience has been that any tests which ARE needed will be done.
