Fungal infection and on warfarin

Has anyone here had a fungal infection while on warfarin? If so how did you treat it? It seems all treatments can raise the INR and some can mess with heart rhythm. I am getting conflicting information between doctors, pharmacists and even INR nurses. Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks!

Is this on a toenail ? My GP said because I was on a range of heart drugs as well as warfarin it was untreatable as my kidneys wouldn't tolerate the cure so I've just had to live with it.

Hi Mike, L hardly know where to start with this one! Don't you just love docs who say'You just have to live with something. '? I have had afib since 2011. A couple of years ago I picked up a toenail fungus at the 'very nice' public pool and health center I use. I didn't want to take oral drugs mainly because I didn't want to add more medications to what I was already on regardless of the reason. So I did some research and cleared this with my PCP (GP). Soaking toes and feet in apple cider vinegar and alternating with epsom salts. Another old time remedy is rubbing Vicks on the toes (wear socks to keep from staining your sheets at night. There are several different directions online re when to soak, etc. Check out and see what might work for you. My toes are almost healed. It takes longer but I've got the time and did it without the poisonous antifungal drugs. They may affect your kidney function but here's a novel idea! If you decide you'd like to try meds why not ask your GP to monitor your kidney function while taking the meds? BTW many things can cause kidney function probs over time. Did you know that everytime we're given contrast dye it takes a toll on the kidneys?. Look it up. I only recently learned this but you can bet I'm going to be paying attention how often tests 'with contrast' have been ordered for me in the hospital. Might it be because they generate $$$? Just a thought. If it were me I would think about revisiting possible solutions for my toenail fungus. An added thought. This is JUST my own thinking but I did share it with my Electrophysiologist and he did NOT dismiss my ideas. I'm in the process of getting off Coumadin after my Watchman Procedure this past January. One of several reasons I am happy to be getting off anticoagulants is the discoloration and bruising I have frequently seen on my feet. I believe coumadin eventually causes circulation in our feet to become impaired. Might this be a reason for toenail fungus to take hold? I would be interested to know how many people on anticoagulants have foot discoloration/ nail fungus or other uncomfortable foot problems. As I said. Just my thoughts. Also it's easy to tell patients just to live with a problem when the doc is not the one living with it. And toenail fungus is not completely innocuous. If left untreated it can cause further problems with feet and in time with the lower leg. Take care. irina1975

I have used the treatment for fungal growth on toenails( yuk) and also had antifungal treatment in my mouth. Both were prescribed by my doctor and I had no problems. At the time I was on warfarin flecanide bisoprolol simvastatin and lanzaprole. My kidney and liver function is normal whenever Ive had blood tests. X
