Warfarin and Ginger

l know ginger interacts with warfarin, but was wondering if it’s ok to take an occasional ginger tea? I have stomach problems and although l take over the counter medications, l thought this would help, but worried it will affect my INR. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I take Warfarin and every morning in my breakfast alternate with a quarter of a level teaspoon of ground ginger or cinnamon. I also quite often drink ginger tea (just one cup every few days). I have my own machine to test my INR but cant see that my results are affected at all.

That’s good to hear Jean. Thank you. I would like to get an INR monitor and had a good offer but they won’t put the testing strips on prescription and they are very expensive to buy. I will now go and get some ginger tea. 🥰

I get the testing strips on a prescription. It's strange how doctors practices have different rules. Just be aware too that what suits me, like ginger or cinnamon may not suit you.Jean

Jean, do you know if it’s ok to have chamomile tea? I mean now and again, not regularly. It seems most of these herbal teas have a question mark. I got my ginger tea yesterday and it was so good on my stomach and made such a difference and help. Thanks.

Sorry, I really don't like camomile tea so never have it these days.

some years back I spoke to my local pharmacist on the same question. He said a ginger tea is ok as there’s very little ginger in tea bags but to be sensible. Fresh ginger was more concerning but can be used sparingly and as long as it wasn’t every day and every meal. I am on apixaban. I’ve taken heed of his advice and been fine.

Thanks Francis. Do you find it helps your stomach? I have a hiatus hernia and sometimes l feel nauseous with it.

Yes it does for me. It doesn’t always get rid of the problem but it leaves a warming feeling which relieves things.

Hi

Why not take Gavastin? For stomach problems.

Mum used to give me Dinnefords as a youngster. For acid stomach. Reflux.

Finally at 50 years with having bad pain circulating around to the back the surgeon took it out. The Gall Bladder. Found to be disintegrated and the bits stuck to all the surrounding areas.

So have a colonosposy? and camera mouth down to stomach, and ultra sound. The latter showed little balls. The balls turned out to be blood balls.

If I ever had antibiotics I felt improved. GP should have listened.

I think you should have some investigation into your stomach issues as that may be causing your AF.

Hi

Plain yoghurt is soothing.

What about the bedtime tea soothing flower leaves. I used to try everything and now since 2000 I've forgotten since being 'renewed'. But I stay o a low fat diet.

Take care, JOY. 74. (NZ)

Thanks for your help Joy. Low fat diet is good and sugary foods promote inflammation. I think maybe l overdid the diet at Christmas- too much rich food. We live and learn the hard way. Best wishes 🥰

Have you tried famotidine. I take it to counteract the damage aspirin can cause. I've had ulcers previously. It's prescription only
