Heart problems after major surgery

I had robotic pyeloplasty surgery last Thursday for a PUJ blockage of my left kidney. They programmed my pacemaker before surgery into a ‘safe mode’ and then back to my personal settings afterwards. Felt awful after surgery but expected this. However on Saturday went into a very fast heart rate which lasted till Monday morning when that gave me 2.5 bisoprolol tablet which slowed it down. Restarted my rivaroxaban Monday morning as well. Came home Monday evening with sotalol tablets one x 80mg twice a day. Took first one at 8am this morning then had fast heart rate of 120 which lasted for about an hour. I have follow ups for the kidney surgery but not for the heart problems.

Think I need some words of wisdom and reassurance please.

Hi, I'm not sure if this will be helpful, but I've been unwell for several days with an upset digestive system and on Sunday my heart went into AF/tachycardia at 150 for over three hours - disappointing - so after what you have been through I think you are doing ok 😃 I hope you feel better soon.

Just had a conversation over Thanksgiving dinner with my surgeon son in law who says robotic surgery is far safer and less traumatic than both regular open and even laparoscopic, so at least your problems were likely not caused by the technique of surgery.

Hi. Can I just ask the reason for the pacemaker initially?

Total heart block.

I would seek a cardiac appointment swiftly0 also discuss meds as Sotolol not thought to be very good now. Hope you settle down- AF is easily triggered by any strain on the body. Take care

Thanks rosyG, I was puzzled why the hospital are not making me any follow up appointments for the cardiac dept. All they said was Sotalol was a rate control drug and bisoprolol was only used to slow the heart rate down. When I feel better I will speak to my GP about a follow up.

It ‘s very common that the stress of surgery can initiate a new arrhythmia or aggravate an existing one, You have to contact your cardio in case you need to have your medicines adjusted.
