I’ve had absolutely no problems with Apixaban, been taking for about 14 months now and was previously on Pradaxa. I have noticed a few people have some side effects but for me, definately the best A/C for me, I’m on 5mg x 2 daily.

Having just had a TIA I now think Apixaban my best friend. What scares you about it?

Always a good idea to wear compression socks on long haul and to get up and move around if you can otherwise do the recommended ankle/foot/leg exercises about every hour or so. Stay very well hydrated, drink (water!) about twice as much as you think you need. Avoid alcohol and have a good flight.

Going anywhere nice?

Oh and don’t take aspirin with Apixaban - unless specifically advised to by your doctor,

I took Apixaban 5mg twice a day for 6 months recently after asking my Gp to change me. They are always pleased to try new drugs. I was taking warfarin for 5 years before that. I’m now back on warfarin because, for me, Apixaban had too many side effects. Headaches from Hades and brain fog being the main things, though an upset stomach for the full 6 months wasn’t pleasant either.

I’m happier being in control of my INR as I home test. I’ll now stay settled on the old tried and trusted drug for life.

This is just my personal experience, most have few or no side effects.

Since there have been no studies that show increased efficacy of one regimen over the other(that I am aware of) it comes down to a matter of cost, convenience and tolerability.

I'm 67 (male) and I'm on 2 x 5mg a day. Been on it for a couple of years, and really got nothing to report. I do everything everyone else my age does includng flying abroad. I thought being on anti-coagulants helped prevents clots when flying? I never wear socks, just move around as much as I can on long haul.

Thanks for info that really does make me less anxious did you get any side effects from apixabam

in reply toApixabam

No side-effects at all that I know of. I have developed a bit of tinitus but don't think it's the Apixaban.

That’s good news 😊

Well, I have a very severe tinnitus, caused by the TIA in my brain, starving the cochlear of supply. The Apixaban didn’t make it worse, not sure I’d notice as it’s already very loud and intrusive.

I've been taking apixaban for about 10 months. No problems other than that I bruise easily particularly backs of hands and forearms. I'm willing to put up with that if it reduces the risk of a serious stroke.

Personally, I would wear compression socks on a long haul flight, but I think I'd do that whether I was taking an anti-coagulant or not. All the other advice given is good - especially staying well-hydrated (with water).

Have a great trip!

Been taking Apixaban for well over 2 years now - no problems as far as I’m aware - also 2 ablations. Frankly I seem to take so much stuff like metoprolol, losartan, simvastatin, low dose aspirin (plus monthly hormone therapy injections) I fail to see how one can distinguish which medication causes a particular side effect. I’m just happy to have been AF free for a year or so and that my PSA after radiotherapy is currently 0.5 down from 14. Yes I occasionally get tummy upsets, cough a lot and so on but who doesn’t. I’ve given up trying to evaluate it all - just enjoy the bonuses all the treatment has bought me.

Hi kipperjohn, I’m curious about the monthly hormone injections. did your doctor prescribe that to help prevent AF? I too have had 2 ablations but am still on a lot of meds because AF reoccurred.

Hi Cevetello1 Apologies that in hindsight my post might have been confusing. The hormone therapy is for prostate cancer which I was diagnosed with in January but after radiotherapy in the summer the prognosis is pretty good. My point was that with so much medication for different things it is not always easy to attribute a specific side effect or issue to a particular drug or treatment. Everyone’s body reacts differently- - I certainly couldn’t nail down anything I take for AF - the side effects from hormone therapy and radiotherapy are however easier to identify and more specific.

As to the original question about Apixaban I’ve had no real issues even with a hernia operation this year and dentistry. I had a DOAC review at my local surgery which went ok.

As for the ablations my EP was concerned at one point that despite him being very satisfied with the procedures I might fall with a catagory that the AF was coming from a source other than the pulmonary veins. However over time things settled down so please don’t give up hope.

Kind regards.

Hi

I’m very much a newbie to all this but I’ve had no side effects apart from susceptibility to bruising. Otherwise all fine. I’ve been on several long haul flights recently and always wear socks as a matter of course. I feel more comfy in them. I expressed my concerns about flying to my GP and he said I should be one of the safest on the plane because of the apixaban ??

Have a great time
