Alcohol and Flecanide

I am only on Flecanide when in active AF. Is it safe to have a couple of glasses of wine when on the Flec?

Good morning, I have been taking Flecanide for a few years now and have the occasional glass of red wine, I limit myself to 2 glasses but that's probably enough anyway! Enjoy :)

I am not sure about the Flecainide but Prof Schilling says there is clinical evidence that 10 units or more per week does seem to produce an episode of AF .

Surely if your AF is paroxysmal ( not all the time ) you would be doing all you can to get back into nsr if you having a bout?? To answer the question though when I was on flecainide x2 per day I did on occasion drink alcohol and when I looked into it there are no known interactions. The effect of alcohol on the af is the issue not the effect of alcohol on flecainide

I would not drink alcohol while in AF. Wait until the flecainide has worked and you're back in NSR.

I've been on flecainide 200mg a day for the last 15 years. There's no problem drinking with the flec, but for me alcohol is a trigger for my af, so my drinking is now limited to special occasions and then I only have 2 pints at the most! I know it doesn't affect everybody the same but might be worth being mindful of this.

me too, I found even a small glass of wine will start the fluttering and well, I don't think it's worth the hassle of having an episode after such a small amount of alcohol so, I drink elderflower wine instead! :-)

It's more important to me to be in nsr. I am on flecainide for 3 years not one drop of alcohol in 4 years as also on beta blockers and warfarin. Being af free apart from ectopics is bliss. Use to drink occasionslly but it is something that isn't worth the risk to me. We are all different. My cardiologist actually said a small glass of red would not hurt.

Is alcohol a trigger for your AF, when I had paroxysmal AF, I would not have had alcohol whilst in AF, I am now in permanent AF & have 2 Sherry glasses of wine at weekends, you know what your body can tolerate, it's probably not wise to be drinking even without the flecanide

bin the alcohol !!! I think doctors say a small amount is OK as they don't want to restrict patients but all literature lists it as a risk for AF-

I've had AF for about twenty years. For me alcohol is not a trigger. Soya and coffee (not caffeine but coffee itself) were triggers. I was on Flecainide 150mgs x 2 a day for 12 years and alcohol didn't affect the flecainide. There is no standard human body. I now have persistent / permanent asymptomatic AF. I like a drink of wine now and again, but don't drink much because I watch my calories. I've lost weight by going back to sensible eating and drinking more water and feel better for it.

It may take the AF longer to resolve or it may not resolve if it's a trigger as it will negate effects of the Flecanaide
