Tachycardia is a heartbeat that is fast but regular. AF is an irregular beat and is often fast but some of us can have a fairly normal rate with it. An experienced eye can spot AF on an ECG / EKG because the irregularity is plainly visible and also there are no P waves.
It is not easy to diagnose AF if it comes and goes and it gets monitored only when it's not there. I hope that makes sense! Both tachycardia and AF are problems with the heart's electrical system.
Having something wrong with your heartbeat can be very frightening but both tachycardia and AF are less life threatening than they sometimes feel. It is easy to think the worst - and if it happens often over many years, it is equally possible to go the other way and disregard one's misbehaving heart.
Thankyou for your reply I understand what you are saying , as I already have a disease heart valve I worry in case other things make it worse regards angela
As said below, AliveCor (or Kardia) can be a good thing to have. You can get fitness monitors and medical monitors and it's the latter that will help with recoding the heart's activites and aid diagnosis.
Hello wow that seems a really good idea Jonathan thankyou I will have a look into that, I do have an iPhone watch on all the time it to monitors my heart rate while I have it on my wrist I can take that to my Drs , do you think they are about the same in what they do ? Regards angela
The watch can measure your pulse but the ECG tells a lot more about what is happening in your heart and indicates what, if anything, needs to be done about it. Also it stores a full ½ minute of heart rhythm each time and saves it it.
