To change from Warfarin to Apixaban or........not.

I have now been OK'd to change from Warfarin to Apixaban. I have been pestering the GP for some time. I spoke to a new young GP last week and she immediately agreed after my blood tests were all OK.. I don't think she knew too much about AF though.

I have collected the Apixaban tablets from the chemist and the leaflet mentions that if you are over 75 and under 60kg you should speak to your doctor,. well I am 77 and weigh about 10 stone. My Doctor didn't mention any of this.

I would be grateful for any comments/advice as I am now not sure what to do. By the way I am Permanent AF and have been on Warfarin for 15 or so years.

Love to hear your comments.

Jean

Have a lovely Christmas

Thanks for your reply 10gingercats.

Your reply has given me more confidence and I will see the AF nurse on Wed and go for it.

There are two strengths of Apixaban, 5mg and 2.5mg. The lower dose may be used for people who meet certain criteria of age, weight and liver function. There are also guidelines for changing from Warfarin to Apixaban which you have probably been given. I have been taking 5mg twice daily for 3 years without problems.

The link below is old but it gives a very good overview of using Apixaban and two of the other NOAC's. I hope you find it useful.

Maybe wait until after the holidays and then run it past your GP.

If you are in inr range with your warfarin you could wait until after the Christmas break and seek advice from your medic if you are concerned before switching. Happy Christmas.
