hi can anyone who has had an ablation have found the ablation has left them short of breath I have heard of two but they live in america

Hi Squady - I've had three ablations and from the second one onwards I've certainly felt that I'm not breathing correctly. I feel that my breathing is very shallow and I'm sure lovely deep intakes of breath used to come naturally at one time.

hi thanks for the reply I'm already puffy from copd and paf my med team want me to have an ablation but its out the door I don't want more breathing problems

Hi Squady - I have to be honest and say that on the whole my ablations have helped me. Before I had any I soon became exhausted if I did any bending (picking up hedge cuttings etc, would pick up two lots and that was it) and when walking up any hills my heart would really bang in my chest (up to then I had thought everyone's did that). I can now bend without getting the extreme exhaustion and my heart no longer bangs in my chest going up hills. Also my attacks of AF no longer leave me feeling drained for days on end afterwards.

thanks jean I'm much like you but the copd is dong all the stuff you have mentioned and the bronchiectasis ha destroyed half of a lung now the af I cant go through an ablation and still have af with the other two if I get a pace and ablate the h af will be destroyed and the pacemaker will keep my hart inline for the few years I have left from what you say you are well on the mend god luck for the future

Hi yes I had that problem. I had to ask my cardiologist to investigate why, and saw a respiratory consultant, who found that my phrenic nerve had been damaged during the ablation procedure. The phrenic nerve acts to raise and lower the diaphragm to allow the lungs to expand when we breathe in. Not as terrible as it sounds though. The nerve does usually repair itself over time. This was last Nov, and the shortness of breath, although not completely back to normal, is much improved and I'm confident will be fine in a few more months. I'm glad I found this out, as I'd be worried sick had I not known! This may not be the case for you, but if it continues I'd get it checked out anyway, as shortness of breath isn't great.

thanks tessybear sounds if the ablation has worked for you as for me copd Is the one causing the problems including the af ive got to convince them to give me apace and ablate and hope that gets rid of the af and can fight the copd and bronchiectasis for the few years I have left

I also experienced this but it went away after a few months and I am 1000% better than before ablation. I am no athlete and going up hills still leaves me breathless but I can walk at a good pace, work around the house and large garden - so do normal stuff for my age. I am 67.

As an ex smoker I try not to blame everything on AF!! But maybe blame smoking for AF!!

Lallym are you on meds too after ablation?

I had ablation in Nov 2013. I was on warfarin but changed recently to apixaban. No other meds. My EP stopped bisoprolol on day of ablation. I had a rocky 5 months but then all went quiet and great since then.

Lallym good to hear that. I'm concerned about them wanting me to take something after but I cannot. I think the meds maybe "holds" the ablation better? Like insurance policy? Well it sounds like you are doing very well without so I'm going with your story! I like it! Happy for you that it's so good now!

Just the one so far. Have had a few episodes but lasted only minutes and approx 2 or 3 in last year. So EP says may need another but wait and see. May never go beyond that and not worth doing as feel fine. Just enjoying feeling good and not worrying about tomorrow. If I need another I will do it but so far so good.

thank for the reply I put my hands up and blame myself or he way I am sounds as if the a ablation has worked for you I would sell y sole to the devil to do stuff like you god willing at 67 you have a life to look forward to get out and enjoy it your post has helped to make my mind up
