I've recently started on Apaxiban and have found my mood is low and I'm lacking get up and go ! I shouldn't be feeling like this so I've begun to wonder if this drug could be the cause ? Has anyone else experienced the same side effects - Cathy

Apaxiban/ depression low energy
Have you read the known side effects on the leaflet? If it mentions low mood/depression then see your GP to report it.
I'm on apixaban but no side effects. Have you had your thyroid tested, as an under active thyroid can cause tiredness and low mood. Mine is borderline and I have to have it tested again in three months but Dr said to come back sooner if I have any of these symptoms. Hope you feel better soon.
I was warned not to read the side effects leaflet - I am fully aware of watching for bleeding etc. Cathy
Hi
I'm on apixaban - have been on and off it for about a year and I definitely feel very low at times and also very tired and lacking energy. It's so difficult to gauge what might be causing these feelings ... I find the whole AF thing very anxiety causing & even though I've had what appears to be a successful ablation I still feel very anxious and depressed at times -it's illogical but there you are & I tend to blame this!!
I'm not aware of any of these as listed side effects but everyone is different so you never know. There are definitely other options in the anti- coagulation field that you could try too.
Can you talk to to your GP? They may know ... But I have found that CBT has helped me & I know others find anti depressant medication is the answer.
Hope you soon feel better
Ruth
Hi Ruth thankyou for your kind reply - I get down when as now my energy levels are rubbish if I have some energy my mood lifts. I have IBS so the consultant thought Apaxiban would be less likely to upset my gut. Possibly the sudden change to hot summer weather may well be draining me to so I'll keep taking the Apaxiban and see how it goes urghhh!!
Hi I use Apaxiban, have done for two years now. I don't put mood swings down to it. I think it more to do with stress., at work in particular. But half of it is getting use to a differant way my body works now. I have to listen to time to sleep, rest etc.
I have been taking Apixoban for two and a half months now with no side effects apart from a little dizziness at the beginning of taking.
Hi Trilby, I take Apixaban and have experienced low mood and fatigue. In addition I take nebivolol and candesartin, so they could also be affecting my anxiety levels etc. I haven't read the leaflet either.
Thankyou Peddling can I ask did you notice the low mood and fatigue in the early days of starting Apixaban ? If so did it settle down or become less intense? Cathy
I have been taking it for two years approx. initially Together with ramipril digoxin and bisoprolol. The latter were changed and in the case of digoxin dropped. I did notice significant improvements initially, but feel that any stress is heightened and exacerbated by the drugs. Just can't say with any certainty, which one. I am also experiencing mild stomach discomfort, which I think is related to Apixaban.
Sorry that you feel low. The side effect list that is provided to clinicians for Apixaban includes the following:
Psychiatric
Common (1% to 10%): Insomnia, depression
Nervous system
Common (1% to 10%): Dizziness, headache, fatigue
So your symptoms might be due to the Apaxiban. I'd certainly encourage you to discus this with your GP.
Mark
Thanks Mark - ah well looks like I've got at least two of the side effects - well I think so I'm feeling brighter today and not quite so fatigued so far!! Cathy
Hi Mark
Where are you getting this info. from? I'm interested because I've just had a look at the leaflet in my box of Eliquis and it doesn't say any of this - in fact the only side effect it mentions is the many different bleeding risks!
Thanks
Ruth
I have access to a whole host of clinical, medical and pharmacological info as I work for the NHS as a clinician - I am an NHS psychotherapist. Here is a useful and accurate website link - scroll down to the For Healthcare Professionals section drugs.com/sfx/apixaban-side...

On any of the websites look at the medical professionals or clinicians area rather than Joe Public because frequently there is additional information. Unfortunately for us some do impose login restrictions. In addition ask your pharmacist because they have access to information. I don't know if the following is still true but some years ago I was told that the pharmaceutical companies agreed the leaflets at the time of getting their licence and approval to market and thereafter did not need to change them unless major differences came to light / fruition and needless to say that very rarely happened. Also if they wanted to change their leaflet then they had to submit an application to do so which costs money.
I also understand that in the majority of cases side effects often don't get reported and logged unless they are major because of the time and effort involved. Also us patients are guilty because we either muddle along or by the time we see consultant a lot of time has passed.
My hunch is that everyone is better at doing this in America because they are a far more litigious country and, for those with paid for healthcare, see their clinicians more speedily.
I have been on it for about six month and no side effects. Hope it gets sorted.
When I was on it I became v emotional. Tearful etc but I was also in shock having had a f.
I haven't had any problems with Apixaban - but Bisoprolol caused me definite low mood issues....
Hi Trilby I have been on Apixaban for about a month and I feel absolutely drained no energy at all. I am usually a really active person power walking jogging and aerobic classes but I am finding it difficult to do anything even going for a walk. I am thinking it must be the Apixaban as I felt much better on Warfarin. I know it means going back to blood tests but I am thinking I will have to.
Hi fran15 - it's a puzzle isn't it trying to decided what - if anything - is to blame for the lack of energy and quite where the get up and goes gone ??!!! I was on warfarin years ago for 9 months and was ok on it as far as I can remember but to be fair I was 20 years younger recovering from an operation so was on the road to recovery anyway not waiting for Cryotherapy and still enduring AF
