I am having a really difficult time with apaxiban which causes quite severe joint pain and upsets all my digestive system. I was briefly prescribed edaxaban and felt so much better but after 2 weeks I was told this drug is not effective for me with good kidney function and I had to revert to apaxiban. So I am not sure what to do next. It looks like these drugs and warfarin all have the same side effect profile. Has anyone who suffers from these side effects found an answer? I have to take them but they are making me feel terrible.

Side effects of apaxiban
Been on warfarin for 16 years with no problems. If you are that sort of person I guess they will all affect you. We are all different.
I would query what you were told. If your kidney function is good then why would Edoxaban be worse for you than Apixaban? Who told you this?
The neurologist prescribed edaxaban but the anti coagulation unit said if your kidneys are working very well this drug is not effective as the kidneys eliminate it. I checked and this is true. There is an FDA black box warning on the drug to say that. Very worrying really.
Seems odd. Your kidneys are meant to eliminate it. Usually poor kidney function indicates a reduction in dose . We don't seem to have these concerns about it in Europe.
Edit: I looked up the black box warning and it seems that the comparisons in efficacy were done with Warfarin. Given Edoxaban is in the same class of drugs as Rivaroxaban and Apixaban there seems little info as to whether these present problems for those with normal kidney function. Personally I think you have to decide what is best for you - to live your life everyday with joint pain and digestive upsets ( both of which might well increase your incidence of afib directly for the digestive upsets and indirectly because of the stress of the joint pain) or to take the risk of the Edoxaban being less effective in preventing an ischaemic stroke that might never happen. I understand your dilemma as I have both indigestion and worsened joint pain on Apixaban.
Thanks for taking the time to reply to this. I was told I was very low risk for stroke and so I had no anti coags until I had a TIA in Feb. So I feel I have to take them but I have lost confidence in my neurologist now since the change in prescription and hasty change back by an alarmed anticoagulants unit. I will probably have to take them forever now so it is a dilemma.
I too had a TIA so started on Apixaban. I think the anti coag unit are panicking unnecessarily. You have to make a decision based on your overall quality of life. The high dose Edoxaban will provide protection. It might not be quite as good as Apixaban but if it comes with no side effects that is a big advantage. Lots of people in the UK are on Edoxaban . This kidney business is a new one on this forum.
Hello pip5000. I discontinued warfarin and have been using an all natural method of blood thining since fall of 2015. No issues. I take 1 400FU capsule of Nattokinase every day before bedtime. I occasionally take 2 once a week. I also add to the thinning by also tak1 Vitamin E and 1 D3 (helps wipe out any viral issues like Covid) and 2 turmeric daily. The Nattokinase is also been proven by many studies including from nih.gov/ to be as effective in dissolving blood clots as some expensive drugs that hospitals use if a person has clots.
I feel great and never looked back.
I have looked at the original Korean study which showed poorer results on ischaemic stroke compared to warfarin for those with good creatinine clearance. The poorer results were only seen with the low dose Edoxaban but for the high dose Edozaban there was not much difference. Do you know which dose you were prescribed?
PIP. I saw a Cardiologist yesterday . I only take 1.25mg Apixaban because I have a low body weight. Cardiologist said my kidney function was too good to take a low dose as my kindneys would excrete it too quickly hence giving me less protection . advised to take a higher dose. I'm on the fence with that one.
My husband has been on it for 16 years with no issues hope you get sorted👍🏼
Been on warfarin for 16 years never had any problems I test myself and alter medication myself. I have a proper blood test every few months
Hello Pip500, please do not hesitate to contact the A F Association website to view our online Patient booklets, you may find the A F Fact File helpful in offer support, or download the Warfarin factsheets available heartrhythmalliance.org/afa...
Sorry to hear you are having side effects - I’ve been on warfarin for 11 years and have no real side effects. Prior to that I had a few TIAs (due to my sticky blood) and was prescribed aspirin. Sadly this wasn’t effective enough and I had a big stroke 11 years ago - so my advice is to try to stick with it. Talk to a pharmacist as they often can give alternatives and try a good quality probiotic to help digestion.
