I want to go back to using a hot tub and sauna again, but I am worried it will cause Afib. What experience have you had?

I have used the hot tub at the local swimming pool health suite regularly without any problems. I only use the sauna or steam room occasionally and then just for a few minutes as it definitely raises the heart rate. The notices at the facility suggest talking to your doctor and some especially recommend caution if you are on an anticoagulant. My personal situation is that I have had a valve replacement and suffer from paroxysmal AF.

Hi there I have had the same .valve replacement and afib are u on FB love 2 chat I'm in perm afib now :(

All I can say is that I had a very hot bath when in AF because I thought it might be comforting and it made me feel dreadful. I would definitely not do the hot thing if you're actually in AF. Having said that, I love my hot baths and they've never actually put me into AF...

When we went to the thermal baths at Rotorua Queen Elizabeth Hospital a nurse checked our BP before allowing us to use it. Amazing value at about 50p to have the pool to ourselves for an hour.

Hi,I have used hot tubs and steam rooms and have never experienced AF whilst using them or afterwards. I have tried a sauna but although no AF I couldn't tolerate it.I have paroxysmal AF. To be honest I never thought about it triggering AF.I never overdid the recommended time though. Since starting anti coagulants I have only used a hot tub on holiday which was outside so didn't get too hot. It might be best to check with Dr. first.

Best wishes Kath

This must vary from person to person, because hot tubs are a terrible AF trigger for me. Heat can expand blood vessels, causing low blood pressure, which causes the heart to beat faster to compensate. Low blood pressure also makes one a fall risk. I almost passed out several times in the shower after hot tub.
