If I understand you correctly you are asking if a person can have lots of cardioversions. Well yes in theory but once they have shown that you can be put back into normal rhythm then I think plans should be made to try different treatments and if this includes ablation then why not have one.

The whole question about treatment of AF is how do you improve a patient's quality of life. AF wont kill you of course so it is all about symptom control. Provided that you are controlled as far as rate is concerned then you would be very unlucky to suffer any long term damage from AF which I think is your second question. Uncontrolled AF can lead to cardiomyopathy and even heart failure but seldom does if you are controlled by drugs.

I think the question of ablation depends on how badly your life is affected by your AF. If drugs do not help then why not go that route. I am sure most people know my views on that!

If I haven't answered your question please say.

Hi Karim

I was diagnosed with AF about 10 years ago and my cardio lasted about 3 months

My doc gave me the option of further cardio with no guarentee of success or going on warfirn for the rest of my life. I chose wafrin and have been fine with it so far.

I just live with the AF and get to recognise the symptoms when they occur like breathlessness, tiredness etc

Hope this helps

Was it you GP (as I suspect) or a cardiologist? Not sure how old you are either. How often do you get the AF incidents and how badly?
