Wonder if anyone can help I am having a ablation on 9th October I take rivaroxaban and have been told to carry on taking it. Reading one of the other posts they say most hospitals will only carry out procedure if you are on warfarin should I be worried ?

Hi Rob

Hospitals will certainly be aware of the newer anti-coagulants, and do not differentiate any longer between them and warfarin when considering procedures, although their approaches may differ slightly

I think you have nothing to worry about

Be well

HI, I had a pacemaker fitted and an AV node ablation while on Rivaroxaban with no concerns at all earlier this year.

Good luck,

Wendi

No, I'm on apixaban and stayed with it. This confusion probably comes from the fact that most of the dusty documentation around the preparation for the procedure talks of warfarin - because that's all there was - and it is being wrongly insisted upon by a small number of people.

"No dear, it says here you must be on warfarin!" You can hear it now, can't you?

Mind you, when you say you were told to carry on taking the rivaroxaban, I would imagine you will have to stop the anticoagulant the day before the procedure, resuming soon afterwards once they've checked the groin wounds.

Good luck with yours on the 9th.

Thank you for reply I have been told to not stop taking it to carry on as normal?

I was on the same meds and surprised when I was told this, I phoned them up and got it confirmed keep taking them. After the Ablation I was told to stop taking them, although I see some doctors telling people to continue taking it.

Have to trust what they tell you, although it is hard when doctors give different advice to different people. Good luck.

I have been put on rivaroxiban especially for preparation for ablation by my cardiologist carrying out thep procedure. I otherwise do not need anticoagulant therapy.

Hello Robert,

I had an ablation for atrial fibrillation and flutter last November, having been on Rivaroxaban for 6 months. I was admitted for surgery on the Monday and instructed to omit the drug on both Saturday and Sunday evenings. I had the op at Papworth Hospital. Also had a hip replacement in June this year and again was instructed to omit the drug for a couple of days before my op. All surgeons have their own ideas on treatment and you need to have trust in your own guy.

Good luck for the procedure. By the way mine was a great success. Hope you have the same result.

Regards Pam
