I think i have the right one. Saw my GP today regarding a totally different matter to my AF. I mentioned if I should be on any anticoagulants. He said that due to my score being 0 and my blood pressure being 124/75 he said no i didn't. Is there any feelings about that on here. Thanks Chris

I have normal blood pressure and a CHADSvasc2 score of zero and I've been anti-coagulated for 12 years, if you include aspirin that I was originally on. My EP changed me to Warfarin about 4 years ago. I'm 64 and no family history or other medical conditions other than I have to take statins to keep my cholesterol down.

I have low CHAD score but my consultant said he only uses this as a guideline and takes other factors into consideration. He said given my atrial enlargement and fibrosis he felt I should be on an anticoagulant and started me on Rivaroxaban a year ago.

I think it may be worth getting a second opinion, I chose to on another matter related to management of my heart problem and was glad I took that step. The consultant I now see has been very supportive.m

Hi Chris, I saw my cardiologist last friday and mentioned the majority vote here for anticoagulants. I said I appreciate I am just 61 with Lone PAF, normal 120/75 blood pressure, just on Flecainide ,no other issues, regular exerciser and a CHADS 0 but that I didn't want to be irresponsible by not taking anti-coags.

He confirmed he wouldn't let me be irresponsible!

I think it is always a personal opinion. I scored 0 and didn't take ACs for about 5 years and that was a very personal choice after a lot of research and consideration of the risk/benefits.

There is very mixed opinions out there, it is not a open and shut case case however, what stuck in my mind was A comment posted here a while ago, you can stop taking ACs anytime but you can't undo a stroke.

I took one of the NOACs for 18 months, I was prescribed them by EP who wanted to do ablation within 2 weeks and wouldn't unless I was had been anticoagulated for at least 10 days.

I had lone PAF for 18 months or so and my EP didn't have me on anticoagulants. But then I started warfarin prior to a successful (so far) ablation last May. My EP kept me on them until October when we discussed ongoing coagulation and as my CHADSVASc was 1 (female) he said I really didn't need them any more. However, by this time, I'd joined this site and was armed with all the latest thinking and I mentioned that i'd read that ablation doesn't necessarily remove the risk of stroke and he agreed. So I stayed on them and moved onto Rivaroxaban (my choice as I was sick of watching my diet). Bottom line is that it's a risk benefit weigh up and I fall on the side of not taking them. However, my EP is not insisting that I stop them and as have no problems taking them, I think I'll stick with them - as CDreamer says - you can't undo a stroke but you can stop AC's any time - very true.

Sorry Chris, should have added to my reply that I haven't had an AF episode for 11 months and also I take a Krill oil daily supplement and plenty of olive oil in my diet. When my next episode happens, the cardiologist said wait 3 hrs and if not back to normal start taking Rivaroxaban (one of the NOAC's), which I have at home.

I am not on any medication either. I think its quite common. But that's because they're treating a stroke risk. What state that leaves your heart in i don't know.

Hi Chris

You will get many answers, but my score is zero, I choose to anti-coagulate.

Being a "beancounter" I run the numbers and for me the very slight increase in bleed risk compared to the very large increase in stroke risk. No contest, but a personal opinion.

What the GP said was I have a 1.9% risk, not sure if that rights? He is a very good GP so from what people say on here he should be offering me them. When I saw the EP, which was a couple of years ago he also said then that i didn't need them...All so confusing!!
