Ablation time

Well, 11 and a half months since this all started I'm getting my ablation next week. Had my pre op Sunday last, and everything was OK....... feel a little better about it after seeing the place and having it explained!

Any hints or tips to get me through the initial stages?

Very best wishes to you both. Rest as much as you can and don't do too much, too soon. You may get a few runs of AF or other irregularities for some time, and you may not, but don't get too down if that happens.

Let us know how you get on.

I've had two ablations and can assure you there is nothing to worry about. It will be over in no time and then, as you may know, you need to rest for a few weeks as you may feel a little tired. I found that I needed an afternoon nap.

Best wishes and please keep us informed of your progress.

Relax and enjoy , be amused at the lead overalls the staff have to wear, like Roman armour and above all don't over do it afterwards.

Have a good day, both of you.

By initial stages, Jedimaster, do you mean from arrival at the hospital to the start of the procedure?

My first ablation went very quickly, and I was in the cath lab in no time. The second was very different. I arrived at 8am and there is plenty to be done, like an ECG, INR check and cannula to be inserted. (I had not had a pre op appointment as I was squeezed in with less that a week's notice when my INR was finally satisfactory.) However these things might fill an hour or two but it was 2pm before we actually got going. Thus it was a very long morning with a lot of empty time. Signing the consent form was very scary and I was quite thirsty by 9 am. A cup of anything would have gone down well and I was probably not at my best as time went by. I did have a Bill Bryson book with me, and that's always a good thing to read. So I would recommend having something to keep one's mind active and one's spirits up. Also a mouth rinse. Perhaps something to listen to as well. You might have congenial company but I had a delightful lady with a touch of dementia who told me the same tale about 50 times.

Thanks! Very useful! I'll have Coldplay on my phone and a book in my bag I think. I've been told to arrive at 12 for the list at 1, and I'll be able to eat up until 9am.... which isn't too bad. Been nil by mouth a lot longer when having one of my 4 DC cardioversions last year....

So you can have a decent breakfast! That's a good start. I didn't surface until about 7pm, although they finished at about 4.30. Still wondering if I had a lot of sedation because I was babbling embarrassingly. Did not dare ask in case the answer was yes. But anyway, you will almost certainly be in overnight.

Hope it goes really well - you're in good hands.
