Hi - I was in a similar situation to you in that I was put on Amiodarone in December 2012 pending an ablation in June 2013. Amiodarone is usually a tablet they give you when all else fails to stop your heart from racing. It does have nasty side effects and my thyroid function has been affected too, but unlike you mine is now slightly underactive. I don't know how long you've been taking this drug, but if your cardioversion is on 30th June I would certainly continue with it until then and perhaps for a few months afterwards. Has other medication failed to help?

They thought that the Amiodarone had made my thyroid underactive. So no I don't think it was my thyroid that gave me AF.

Hi - I was on Amiodarone for 18 months and didn't have any problems. I say none, I did have a tendency to burn whilst in direct sun light, as one of the side effects is sensitivity to sunlight. I moved on to Flecainide which is currently working fine for me. I have yet to make the decision whether I want to go for the ablation or stay with the meds, something I will discuss next time I see the specialist. Amiodarone does have some nasty side effects, but if you are not experiencing any and only on the medication for a little while longer, I wouldn't worry too much. Good luck with your ablation and please let us all know how it goes.

Hey guys thanks for the reply,I've been on Ameoderone on & off for a while and a rotine blood test came back with slightly over active thyroid.Hopefully the cardio version "pops" me back in again and then I might get off it ;-) I'll keep you posted.Incidentaley when I'm out its more of a skipping beats than racing ;-)
