Don't like the sound of the article on Pradaxa in today's Mail _ even allowing for the fact that it IS the mail ! What do others think? Sandra

Pradaxa
Hi Sandra - I was just reading that and about to post to say, has anyone read it... All I can say is yikes! Pradaxa is Dabigatran, isn't it? If I were to take a kernel of message from the article, it seems to be saying that (as we know) the NOACs don't yet have antidotes, and that possibly for some people Pradaxa may require monitoring as indeed warfarin does. I am thinking the important thing for anyone on it who read that would be not to panic, because obviously being on an anti-coagulant is much safer than not being on one, if you're judged to need one. But perhaps an article to cut out and wave at the doctor!
G'day Yatsura,
I'm on warfarin, its my best mate, and I won't come off it ever - unless it fails to work for me. Not sure I'd look at Dabigatran (Pradaxa) though. I refer you to the following .....
the Australian Government Threaputic Goods Administration website tga.gov.au/safety/alerts
Having got into the website you need to search for Dabigatran (Pradaxa) and risk of bleeding: Information for Health Professionals and also Dabigatran (Pradaxa) and risk of bleeding for Consumers. There is a wealth of information, make your own judgements. One of the key features is that not all patients are suited for Dabigitran.
Make the time to read it all, am sure you will find it informative.
Cheers,
Aussie John
I go along with that, John. The fact that Oz refused to approve the use of the drug initially and then were subjected to concentrated efforts to create a demand for it, speaks volumes.
Thanks John, very interesting. Like you I am on warfarin ( 11+ years ) and would hate to come off it. Having a Coaguchek monitor is of course a massive help, particularly for unplanned cardio versions which I am rather prone to! Sandra
I am on warfarin but was talking to someone today and the Mail,is looking for a scare story, as I said earlier nothing has changed since it was approved, ignore the panic stories. All drugs have side effects for some people, even aspirin or paracetamol
