THE MEANING OF LIFE.

There once was a man who was the richest man in the universe. His name was Harold DeBarrel IV.

One day he was pondering to himself about "What is the meaning of life?" So, he decided to ask anyone who would listen and discovered that no one could answer that question.

So, he decided to visit every state in the union (including Canada, Mexico and Greenland) to find the answer. But unfortunately, no one was able to answer his question about "What is the meaning of life?"

So, he decided to visit every country in South America and asked everyone one he met if they knew "What is the meaning of life?" Again, no one could answer that question.

So, he decided to visit every country in Europe and asked everyone that same question, if they knew "What is the meaning of life? Still no answer.

So, he then visited most of the countries in Asia and still no answer to "What is the meaning of life?"

By now you can guess that the richest man in the universe spent most of his money in research and only had about $200.00 remaining which now made him the poorest man in the universe.

Well, he finally ended up in a Goodwill Store at the bottom of a huge mountain in Tibet. He started talking with the man behind the Goodwill counter and explained his dilemma about finding out the "What is the meaning of life?" Well, the man behind the counter burst out with the news that there is a great Guru on top of the mountain who knows “What is the meaning of life". At this news Harold fell to his knees and was crying with joy and yelled out "when and where can I find this great Guru?

The store clerk told him that since the Guru lived on top of this huge mountain that the only way anyone can talk to him is in person in his Guru cave. Harold said he was willing to climb that mountain just to find out "What is the meaning of life?" Well, the store clerk said he would need hiking boots, hand claws and a heavy coat to climb the mountain and that equipment would cost Harold his last $200.00. Well Harold bought the used equipment using the last $200.00 he had.

So, Harold began the climb through snow, ice and freezing cold and it took him 2 weeks to get to the top of the mountain.

It was dark when Harold saw a cave in the distance. So, bloody and freezing he finally dragged himself over to the cave and spotted a very old man sitting by a fire who had a long white beard that reached his knees and fingernails that were at least 8 inches long.

Well Harold couldn't contain himself and blurted out "Oh sir, are you the Great Guru?"

And the Guru replied, "Yes son I am the Great Guru".

Harold says, "Oh great Guru, do you know What is the meaning of life?"

Guru says, "Yes son I know What is the meaning of life.

Harold says, "Can you tell me What is the meaning of life?"

Guru says, "Yes son I can tell you What is the meaning of life?"

Harold says, "So great Guru please tell me What is the meaning of life?"

Guru says, "Well, son the meaning of life is "Wet Birds Don't Fly At Night".

Harold says, "Yes they do"

Guru says, "THEY DO?"

thanks

nothing like a reality check !

I just came back frim Machu Picchu - where I met the reality that: I can not tell my body to do things it can no longer do - had to take the sissy trail but I got there ... it was not pretty - my efforts - but i got there

people were kind

Now I know the next adventure has to be on mostly flat surfaces

that's why they made cruises and age/handicapped accessible places - like Paris and London

Thanks for the laugh

keep on truckin

Hey man, doing Machu in September. Planning Japan for next March-April. At 81 (wife 78) the sissy trail will do just fine.

We can always do Paris one more time and river cruises as a last resort before the old folks home. Keep on trukin’.

THE thing that you can do for prep is walk stairs a LOT - without using the hand rail - if possible - if not - well you can get there anyway

BTW the tour guides were very considerate and helpful - though when we met up in Lima 2 days before - I bet the guide thought " Oh no! This old guy is really going to try and do this" - I gave him a healthy tip

Best

Did you have any issues with altitude sickness? Did you go straight to machu or go to Cusco first?

pjd55d profile image
pjd55d in reply toPapa1

I took Diamox - ( acetazolamide ) for altitude sickness - it worked. You start day before assent and stop day of decent

My tour was I think similar to all of them

if you fly to Lima - usual - sea level, next day you fly to Cusco 11,000 feet - then go down to the Sacred Valley by tour bus - and then to a train and then a bus to MP - it takes a day and a half of pretty constant travel to get there - THEN you go into the site. Then bus to overnight at the Machu Picchu Pueblo ( tourist town ) train back to a small town and then bus back to Cusco. Those Inca people wanted to be far away from the invaders - and they got there. Took them 100 yrs to build the city - and then they had to abandon it because the Spanish figured out where they were. The destroyed passes and access, and went WAY deeper into the mountains - and some are still there

Perplexity says:

The phrase "wet birds never fly at night" is more of a humorous or metaphorical expression rather than a scientific fact. It is often used in jokes or as a saying that has been popularized by comedians and in cultural contexts.

From a biological perspective, birds generally do not fly when they are wet because their feathers are less effective at providing insulation and lift when they are soaked. This is due to the structure of feathers, which rely on air pockets to maintain their insulating properties and to create lift during flight. When feathers are wet, these air pockets are filled with water, making flight more difficult.

Some birds, such as nocturnal birds like owls, nighthawks, and nightjars, do fly at night, but this has nothing to do with whether they are wet or not. These birds have adaptations that allow them to navigate and hunt in the dark.

In summary, while birds generally do not fly well when wet due to the loss of lift and insulation, the phrase "wet birds never fly at night" is more of a cultural or humorous expression than a scientific rule.

Thanks T_A.... If I knew what you know regarding wet bird's wings, I would have changed the ending of my post from "they do?" to "of course they don't, stupid". In fact that's a funnier line than "Ready when you are C. B."

What (perhaps) I have learned: The meaning of life is life itself: Life goes on in ever new ways.

The purpose of life is: To learn how to give and how to receive love.

Interesting story. I believe there is not just one meaning of life, but each person has their own.

Here is mine and I assure you I will shed tears as i write this.

I was born into a USAF family the 4th of 5 children. Moving around the first 11 years of life made me learn to adapt. Growing up I was almost always the tallest kid in class. I was smart enough to get by, but did not excel in grades. My size and athleticism was always beneficial. As I went to college and didn't finish started working and got married. Usually made good income but not great. Had two great children and turned out to be productive people. Saving and investing in rental properties allowed us a very comfortable life along with a vacation home.

To sum up, I had a blessed life without not truly appreciating it.

Neither of our children were likely to have children. Disappointed, we had to accept it.

My father had prostate cancer passing at 62yo, I also was DX with it in 2019 at 57yo. Prostectomy and ADT kept it at bay for several years along with EbRT for hot spots. In 2023, PSA started rising into double digits, so switched to Lynparza which helped a little.

In spring of 2024, our daughter announced she was expecting our first grandchild. Now, reality really started to set in .

Last fall, my PSA started into the hundreds. I retired at 62 to concentrate on my health with little help from chemo and now on Xofigo I an hopeful for good results.

Our granddaughter was born in November and even with my PSA now almost 2000, I can look at the face of that precious angle and my troubles disappear.

THAT is my meaning of life.
