Hello all, my husband is 10 months out from his IMRT radiation and for the past week every now and then he gets a little burning sensation at the start of the urination. It’s every now and then but not every day. He’s on monthly Firmagon injections. He had a blood test on Thursday when he got his injection and white blood cell count and urea nitrogen were normal so I’m not sure if it is an infection. As a female I know what a UTI feels like but not sure if this is the case with him. I’m planning to get some test strips tomorrow to see if it is positive for UTI. Any thoughts of what else it could be. He says it started after holding it in until we got to a bathroom when we were outside walking.

Burning in prostate area when urinating
It's called a "late-term urinary side effect." Some tissues respond to radiation immediately; some are late-responding. It is expected in about a quarter of patients and is usually temporary.
If he's got a raised body temperature....... take him to a good urologist.
Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.

No fever. Thank you.
I’ve had the same issue myself on and off .. I put it down to what I thought might be tissue damage after several catheters over the years .It can be painful at times but I can live with the on off symptoms.Bloods done every month but nothing regarding infection’s has shown up
I wonder if something he is eating or drinking could be a factor? Maybe concentrated urine an issue? Drink more water?
Thanks for your response. It’s possible because he likes his coffee although he does try to drink a lot of water too. The doctor did tell him that caffeine and spicy food could exacerbate symptoms.
I had burning from my radiation and the Urologist told me it was Radiation Cystitis that was bleeding into my bladder. After a Cystoscopy which was horrible he said it was Radiation Cystitis and that I had to learn to live with it. I said no way and went to a naturopath who told me drink Slippery Elm bark with warm water. Three days later it all went away and hasn't acted up in 5 years and bleeding stopped. Urologist never heard of it.
Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have heard of slippery elm bark. It is very soothing for inflammatory conditions. So far, he hasn’t had the burning for a few days so hopefully the symptoms will not come back
