I don't have experience with zoledronic acid, only with denosumab (Xgeva).

From what I've read about zoledronic acid, I think you should have regular blood tests for calcium and your kidney function.

If your serum calcium level is low, you need supplements.

If serum calcium levels are fine then no need to supplement with calcium ? All doctors seem to just prescribe it !

Hello,

I would get some medical advice. I know with Prolia (in higher doses Xgeva) most doctors prescribe Calcium and Vitamin D to help prevent low calcium levels in your blood. Zometa (an intravenous bisphosphonate) has a different mechanism of action so I am not sure if calcium is necessary. It is important, however, with Zometa to monitor kidney function regularly. Hope that helps.

If you do take calcium supplements, buy Calcium Citrate which is more bio-available than Calcium Carbonate. Calcium Carbonate is commonly sold at Costco, CVS, etc. I’ve ordered Calcium Citrate through Amazon. I’m sure it must be available at supplement or health food stores. My husband took it with Xgeva for 1.5 years and despite extensive bone Mets and lots of falls, never broke any bones.

I have been on Zolodronic acid for over 2 years now, and my oncologist had already put me on Calcium and D3 supplements. I agree with Mcrpca, you need to take the Citrate form of calcium. I am currently taking 1450mg per day in the form of one capsule twice a day, and have been for 4 years.

I'm on alendronic acid once weekly. I've opted not to do the Calcium and D3 supplements but please discuss with your oncologist.

The most digestable and most quickly absorbed are the oil based calcium supplements, often called 'Liquid Calcium'

"Calcium and vitamin D supplementation (eg, calcium ≥ 500 mg and vitamin D ≥ 400 IU daily) has been prescribed or strongly recommended within clinical trials of zoledronic acid(17) or denosumab(16) and is recommended within the package inserts of both drugs."
