Your urologist can prescribe Xtandi, but I’m getting the impression you have a high PSA and you’re trying to medicate yourself? That’s not the way it works. Have you been diagnosed?
While some procedures require long wait times in the Canadian health care system, those that are time sensitive and urgent are given priority. If your PSA is rising quickly, you won't have to wait for months to see an oncologist.
When my original PSA test came back at 103.0, I had an appointment with a urologist the next day. Within a week, I had a CT scan, MRI, bone scan, and biopsy. Once Stage 4 cancer was confirmed, I saw a medical and a radiation oncologist two weeks later. I started docetaxel about two weeks after that. The system can work quickly when it needs to.
I guess you could self medicate the Xtandi but the docetaxel you cannot self medicate. You need to constantly watch your blood markers to ensure you don't die. It's why most MOs are also hematologist. I suggest you keep working the system you voted for. Otherwise, you need to move south.
thanks, it is a complete shit show here, 5 months wait time etc, I am alive for 26 years because I stayed away from our cancer center, now I have no choice so need to get the change in drugs in my own
our system here is broken and I am on my own, but have kept alive for 26 years until the recent failure of my lupron/casodex combo crashed on me, with psa and test skyrocketing.
no Mets, my psa was only 5.5 when removed, have kept it under 7 fir 26 years! Started to go up while on combo last November so a mess now at 20 plus. Thus the need to change quickly
You CAN NOT self-administer chemotherapy which is only given in an approved clinic or hospital under strict protocols and requires specialized equipment and full time attendance by a nurse. The drugs are prepared by a specialized pharmacy and delivered to the ward on the day of use. The amount of drug prepared is calculated by a software program. The drugs never leave the control of the health care players involved in delivering the dose.
As a pharmacist, 1000% agree - self-medicating these classes of drugs is recipe for disaster. You need a good doctor to confirm the correct/current diagnosis ... then decide on treatment(s) WITH them. I have prepared these drugs myself ... and it is not possible to do so accurately and safely without specialized equipment, let alone if you have a reaction ... take all of your records/thoughts/ideas to a specialist and do not try self-medicating!
there are political issues I am having to deal with, cross cancer is upset that I did not follow Canadian standard treatment protocols so my now living 26 years, far far beyond any patient they have ever had, has created problems for me as I need to transition as my I risk ihc drug combo has failed. It is a sad situation to say the least! Ironically all the drugs I have taken came from their pharmacy but I had my treatment set out by my oncologist and did. Not use theirs! Scary place to be so I am trying to stay alive while I work out the shitstorm that has happened!
If you used an independent registered oncologist in Alberta in the past, then he can prescribe chemotherapy for you that is delivered in an approved facility, he does need to be affiliated with Alberta Cancer.
All approved cancer drugs come from the Alberta Cancer pharmacy, it doesn't matter who (independent or affiliated oncologist) prescribes them.
lots more to the story. My org onc passed away , so just adds to this nightmare. I am not going to post more on this until I sort it out but will pm you. I have been at this a long time but never expected the reaction I got from c.
Whatever current problems you have seem to be self inflicted. If you really need chemo, stop fucking around, get yourself sorted with an oncologist and get on with your treatment.
Easier said than done. My staying alive this long has created problems for them as I was ON combo IHT but they only give out one drug and the fact is in addition to luck, the two of specialists who set up my treatment were 100% correct! let’s leave it because I have to deal with this mess. And I am losing what little time I have because of this. Scary to say the least!
I live in Canada (Ontario) and have trouble understanding the post. When my kidney cancer was diagnosed, I had surgery to remove the tumour and kidney within three weeks. When my prostate cancer was diagnosed, I quickly had meetings with a urologist, oncologist and another doctor. I decided on radiation. When I learned three years later that I was not cured, I went on Lupron 11 years ago and am still on it. Total cost to me (aside from taxes I pay) is $4 for each Lupron dose (once every 4 months). I use whatever doctor I want for my injections and whatever pharmacy I want to get the Lupron.
